Facing into the sunset, Palancar Beach, located 20-minutes’ drive south of San Miguel, is a special place throughout the day. With space to spread out, it’s an uncrowded stretch of paradise near a huge and thriving barrier reef.
Crystal clear water and beautiful white sands, groves of palm trees on a secluded and quiet, almost private, beach – Palancar is the place to come for a rare and authentic Mexican Caribbean experience.
Fish, in and out of the sea, are the order of the day. Tropical fish dart and flash in the waters close to the beach. And on your plate, the local favourite dishes will delight your palate: ceviche, seafood marinated in citrus juice with chillies and filete al mojo de ajo, simple grilled fish with garlic.
Dip and dive with the marine life by snorkelling or kayaking from the beach, or by joining a diving trip out to the reefs. Here on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world, there’s so much to see. For the adrenaline-hungry, a paragliding excursion will take you high out over the deep blue waves.
It’d be very hard not to relax at Palancar Beach, swaying in a hammock under the palm trees or luxuriating with a beachside massage or beauty treatment. Small, tasteful market stalls sell local arts and crafts for visitors to take home as souvenirs. When it comes to the time to leave, you’ll want to take a little piece – or should that be peace – of paradise home with you.
