Walk the rooms, courtyards and storage halls of this well-preserved palace, one of the finest remaining landmarks of the ancient Minoan civilisation.
Take a daytrip from Heraklion to the Palace of Phaistos and discover the ruins of this Minoan palace. This archaeological treasure trove attracts enthusiasts for its famous staircase and royal chambers. Learn how the Phaistos Disc, one of Crete’s most renowned ancient treasures, was found here. Don’t expect the same experience as Crete’s other Minoan palaces however. Unlike its restored counterparts, this palace has been left in its authentic form, right down to its red painted diamond on the floor and clay storage pots.
The Palace of Phaistos is suspected to date back to the time of King Minos, in around 2000 B.C. This Minoan palace, the second-largest remaining in Crete, is believed to have been ruled by Minos’ brother, Radamanthys. The palace structure was greatly damaged by an earthquake in 1700 B.C. and invaders destroyed following rebuild in 1450 B.C. Despite these calamities, much of the palace remains surprisingly intact. Wander the rooms and halls of a truly ancient masterpiece.
Approach the palace through its western entrance and face its grand staircase, which is 14 metres (45 feet) wide. Walk through the magazine and see preserved storage pots, known as “pithos,” which held cereals and grains. The courtyard paving is the same paving that was used by Minoan elites. Stroll to the northwestern corner to see the remains of a red diamond floor painting.
Wander the palace’s inner chambers and see the bedrooms of the king and queen. The workshops nearby once housed the palace artisans and their master crafts. On the southern side of the courtyard, explore the domestic apartments where courtiers lived. Enjoy their views of the Messara Plain olive groves, stretching out into the distance.
Find the Palace of Phaistos around 61 kilometres (38 miles) south of Heraklion. The site is open daily all year and charges a small admission fee. For an extra charge, you can explore the nearby Agia Triada site as well.
