Relax on the soft sands of Red Beach or discover fascinating rock formations and caves around the village of Matala. Try Greek-style seafood with a cool drink at a local taverna and browse a charming shopping district. Throughout these narrow village streets, you’ll also find ancient Minoan remains, important archaeological sites and avant-garde galleries.
Matala entered into the language of pop culture in the 1960s, when its hippie-friendly atmosphere was written about by Canadian singer, Joni Mitchell, in her song Carey. Though hippie culture has faded away, the town still embodies the relaxed atmosphere and beautiful beaches that attracted them in the first place. Join locals and travellers enjoying the sunny coast.
One of Matala’s most curious features is its collection of man-made caves, hewn into the sloping rocks by the sea. These caves date back to Neolithic times. Follow the walking paths down the cliffs to Red Beach and enjoy peaceful sunbathing or warm-water swimming in a beautiful natural environment. Be aware that clothing on this beach is optional.
Just north of the village, the archaeological site of Kommos provides a fascinating insight into the lives of ancient Minoans. Other nearby beaches are worth a visit, as well as the interesting religious landmark, the Monastery of Odigitria. Enjoy its simple architecture and then visit the adjacent Minoan cemetery. Take some time to discover the galleries and shops of the village centre at your leisure.
In the evenings, visitors can follow locals to one of many tavernas, where Greek dishes are paired with Cretan wines. Amongst many delicious meals, dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), tsatziki (yogurt sauce) and fresh seafood dishes stand out as highlights. Wine served is retsina, a Cretan specialty that has a unique pine aroma.
Find Matala southwest of Heraklion. This 67-kilometre (42-mile) trip requires a car. Though Matala’s sights can be seen in a day, you won’t regret taking your time and staying a night or two. Accommodation is readily available around the village.
