Palace of Malia Tours and Activities

Discover this archaeological site, where the culture of the ancient Minoans can be seen in palace halls, artifact-filled storerooms and ritualistic monuments.

Experience the ancient world of Minoan royalty as you explore the Palace of Malia and climb the preserved Grand Staircase. Learn about the sacred rituals that were held at the altar and see the rooms that stored decadent foods for the noble banquets. Informative exhibits on the Minoans are displayed in the information centre. Browse its collection of priceless treasures found in archaeological digs.

The Palace of Malia was the legendary home of Sarpedon, brother of King Minos. Incredibly, the original building has been dated back to 1900 B.C., though it was ruined around 1650 B.C. Much of the observable construction is the second palace, which was also destroyed around 1450 B.C., most probably by an earthquake. The structure remains very well preserved. Walk the uncovered site and experience one of the oldest civilisations in history.

Approach the palace from its eastern gate and enter its spacious courtyard. The paving stones that line this space are the very same that were walked by Minoan royals, thousands of years ago. On the southern side, the Royal Treasury and the Magazines (storage rooms) are intriguing landmarks. See preserved clay pots or “pithos”, which were used to store olive oil or grain.

Stop by the altar, a sacred platform that was once the site of rituals, sacrifices and ceremonies. To the west, the palace’s most iconic monument, Kernos of Malia, stands as a testament to ancient Minoan culture. Its circular stone construction, with a central hole, is thought to have been another ritual platform, where the first harvests of summer were offered to the gods.

Wander north through the palace and enter the necropolis, a sombre catacomb where the Minoans buried their dead. These halls have held many treasures, including the famous golden bee pendant that is now safely displayed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

Find the Palace of Malia around 37 kilometres (22 miles) east of Heraklion. Opening hours change with the seasons ask local travel agents for details. Expect a small admission fee.
