When the pace of life in Kansas City gets too hectic, the locals head for the peace and quiet of Overland Park. This 120-hectare site on the city outskirts offers an oasis of natural tranquillity amid beautifully maintained plantscapes. The arboretum and botanical gardens were established as recently as 1996, but the range of trees and plants is astonishingly diverse. Various different ecosystems are represented, all linked by a network of paths to guide you through this extensive park.Near the entrance is the popular Monet Garden, where the gentle murmur of waterfalls will induce a sense of calm in the most frazzled city slicker. The path through this area is relatively short, making it a popular route for people with limited time to spare. The frogs in the children’s garden are a favourite with young visitors, who enjoy spotting the friendly creatures hopping around in the pond there’s a grass maze as well to keep the little ones amused while their parents snatch a few quiet moments of respite. The sculpture garden offers an alternative view of nature, with stimulating artworks displayed among the trees and flowers.Longer trails penetrate further into the park, with the round trip extending to around 1.6 kilometres. On the way you can admire indigenous tree species in the forested areas and climb the limestone cliff on the south side of Wolf Creek for picturesque views of the gardens. The unpaved long routes may not be suitable for less mobile visitors, but the 800-metre short trail is an easier option, or take an effortless ride round the park on the model train.Every season brings its own delights in this well-planned, floral paradise, but the spring daffodils create an especially welcome burst of colour after the dark days of winter. The Erickson Water Garden contains some 40 varieties of daffodils, providing a compelling photo-opportunity around every corner.Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is around half an hour’s drive south of Kansas City. The park is open daily and there is a small admission charge, except on Tuesdays when entry is free.
