The best area to stay in Nicholson is within the main village along the Nicholson River, particularly around the Nicholson Street and Esplanade area.

This area is the heart of Nicholson, offering easy access to the river and its activities. You'll find the local general store, the Nicholson Hotel, and the public jetty all within a short stroll. The layout is quite linear, following the riverbank, making it very convenient to explore on foot.

For families, staying near the river is ideal. Children can enjoy fishing from the jetty or playing in the open spaces along the Esplanade. Many holiday rentals here offer direct river access, great for launching a kayak or simply enjoying the water views.

Couples looking for a relaxing escape will appreciate the peaceful pace of this area.

The best time to visit Nicholson is during the warmer months, specifically from late spring through early autumn (November to April), when the weather is ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the Gippsland Lakes region.

During these months, you'll experience pleasant temperatures, typically ranging from the early 20s to low 30s Celsius, making it great for enjoying the Nicholson River and the wider Gippsland Lakes. This period also sees less rainfall, ensuring your plans for boating, fishing, or simply relaxing by the water are less likely to be interrupted.

Couples looking for a relaxing escape will find the shoulder seasons (November, early December, and March, April) particularly appealing. The weather is still lovely, but the crowds are generally smaller than during the peak school holiday period in January. This allows for a more tranquil experience, whether you're enjoying a quiet walk along the riverbanks or exploring local wineries.

Families, especially those with children, often prefer the peak summer months of December and January. While it can be busier, this is when the region truly comes alive with water sports and family-friendly events.
