The best area to stay in Mudumalai is generally within the buffer zones surrounding the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, particularly near the Theppakadu Elephant Camp and the Masinagudi area.

Theppakadu is a central point within the reserve's buffer zone, known for the historic Theppakadu Elephant Camp. This area offers a genuine forest experience with accommodation options ranging from forest rest houses to private resorts. It's well-positioned for morning and evening safari departures, as the main safari boarding point is located here. The Moyar River flows nearby, often attracting wildlife.

For families, staying near Masinagudi is an excellent choice. This area is slightly outside the core reserve but still offers a forest setting with a wider array of accommodation, often with more facilities like swimming pools and play areas for children. Many resorts in Masinagudi arrange their own jeep safaris or birdwatching walks, and it's a convenient base for exploring the region's natural beauty while having more amenities close at hand.

Couples often prefer the more secluded resorts dotted around the foothills of the Nilgiris, accessible from the Masinagudi side. These properties typically offer private cottages or treehouses, providing a peaceful retreat with stunning views of the surrounding hills and forests.

The best time to visit Mudumalai is generally during the dry season, from December to May.

During these months, the weather is more predictable, with less rain, making it ideal for wildlife spotting. Animals tend to congregate around water sources, which increases your chances of seeing them. The temperatures are pleasant, particularly from December to February, offering comfortable conditions for safaris and outdoor activities.

For those planning a safari, this period offers the best opportunities to see the rich biodiversity of Mudumalai. The dry conditions mean the vegetation is less dense, improving visibility, and the animals are more active in search of food and water. This is particularly appealing for couples and families looking for memorable wildlife encounters.
