About this property
Mermaid Lair with Rainforest Shower!
Our unique jungalow provides space to relax & experience nature & adventure like never before. Nestled in a beautiful Hawaiian forest, this listing features a cozy cabin with a queen bed. The bathroom is traditional open Hawaiian style although still private. Showering outside in the rainforest is truly magical!
The space Experience the ultimate Big Island rainforest escape while still enjoying the comforts that make your stay relaxing and easy. Stay in a traditional Hawaiian-style cabin surrounded by lush jungle, tropical fruit trees, and the soothing sounds of nature.
Our property is off-grid and powered by a newly upgraded solar system with battery storage and an automatic backup generator, allowing you to enjoy a sustainable stay without sacrificing comfort. We also offer strong Wi-Fi throughout the property and a 10,000-gallon rainwater catchment system that stays full year-round, providing endless hot rainforest showers.
This rustic under-the-sea themed jungalow features exposed stud walls, built-in shelving, and a cozy open feel inspired by island living. The cabin includes a queen bed, mini fridge, propane heater, private full bathroom, covered lanai, and thoughtful touches designed for comfort and simplicity. Please note this particular cabin does not have a window.
A shared outdoor-style kitchen is available and shared with just one other rental, creating a great opportunity to meet fellow travelers. The kitchen includes a brand-new washer and dryer, stainless steel sink, and all the cookware and essentials needed to prepare meals during your stay.
To help you experience the island like a local, we provide a detailed welcome guide filled with our favorite beaches, hikes, waterfalls, scenic drives, hidden gems, and mostly free activities that past guests have loved.
HOT TUB Upgrade your room to include hot tub access. Relax beneath the stars in our communal hot tub deck featuring a plug-and-play spa surrounded by rainforest. Hot tub access is available for an additional $20 per night for the duration of your stay and must be arranged at least one day ahead of reservation.
TOURS & RAINFOREST NIGHTS At night, you’ll be surrounded by the sounds of the living rainforest. To get a feel for the nighttime ambiance, search “Bathing Suits and Rain Boots” on YouTube for examples of what the coqui frogs sound like at night. Think of it as the rainforest’s own nighttime quartet — a uniquely Hawaiian soundtrack many guests find peaceful, cozy, and magical.
BEACH GEAR Guests are welcome to use our boogie boards, surfboards, snorkel masks, snorkels, and beach towels for island adventures.
ANIMALS & FARM LIFE We operate a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dog rescue on the property, so there may be rescue dogs on the acre at any given time. Guests are welcome to interact with the dogs after coordinating with the host, and some guests enjoy taking them on walks or outings to help socialize them and prepare them for adoption.
The property is also home to chickens and a working tropical homestead where we grow foods such as lilikoi, bananas, papayas, pineapple, figs, strawberries, poha berries, sugar cane, lemons, blood oranges, rosemary, basil, and more depending on the season.
MISC DETAILS There are four cabins total on the one-acre property. While the cabins are nearby, guests generally find them more private and peaceful than hotels or condos with shared walls.
Rainforest massages are available on-site starting at $100/hour.
At approximately 1,880 feet elevation, evenings can become cool and cozy, especially during the winter and rainy season. All cabins include propane heaters for comfort. If visiting during winter months, we recommend bringing light layers, a rain jacket, and rain boots for exploring comfortably.
This stay is perfect for travelers looking for an authentic, sustainable, and memorable rainforest experience that combines adventure, nature, community, and island charm.

We had a great stay! The host does a great job providing everything you need for a very unique experience staying near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The surrounding area is dark with some rough roads, but it is worth it given this excellent stay.
I cannot say enough about this place! Dawn thought of everything to make this stay wonferful. Gorgeous location in the jungle and a beautiful cabin! Perfect if you want to explore the area and feel close to nature, but dont quite want to do the whole camping thing. My only complaint is that we didnt stay longer! :)

For what we needed and wanted for this trip it was great. This host propertyhelped us out of a little booking bind to get this trip done
We had a fabulous time, the cabin and location was BEAUTIFUL!!! Loved our kitty friends, they visited daily. And our host Dawn was fabulous. Would definitely stay here again!!!
It was such a cute little cabin that we stayed in, open to the elements but also felt secluded. We were greeted by two excited puppies and it made the stay feel more like home. Would highly recommend.

Very very great place. Dawn is wonderful and very helpful.
We loved this place and for sure will come back.
Many thanks Dawn!
Dawn is awesome and was working hard every time we saw her. She has a beautiful property here and we had a wonderful experience. A whole different world from back home in Indiana. We wanted to steal her awesome cat Mary Jane Its very rural here, a good thing, so get anything you will need before arrival as its a good 20 minute drive to any supplies. Once you hit the sketchy roads your close. All part of the experience and a great one at that!
The property is amazing and Dawn is so sweet. It’s the perfect size space for one or two people and the views were so beautiful. I took a shower while looking into the rainforest.
We enjoyed our stay very much. It is a fun and unique cabin. The only issue was checking in after dark was hard. We hit a rock in the driveway and had a hard time finding the cabin.
Get away from everything and everyone. Dawn’s space is a perfect abode for relaxation and aloha! The nights are filled with the sounds of nature. Dawn is an amazing host and so knowledgeable for all of our questions. Bonus is her sweet doggos that are in for all the pets and kisses. Great amenities, hope to stay again in the future!
Very cool property. Easy to get to, if a 15min drive from the highway. The host provided excellent suggestions for how to make best use of our stay in the area. There could be more lighting in the unit, but everything else was great. Rustic, but comfy.
