Mount Stewart has one of the most inspiring and unusual gardens in its ownership. Add to this a historic mansion and the octagonal Temple of the Winds and you have one intriguing visitor attraction.
Begin your visit in Mount Stewart House. This was built in the 18th century by the Vane-Tempest-Stewart family, which was high in the ranks of British and Irish society at the time. Discover more about the former owners by delving through their rich collections of art and furniture (over 2,500 pieces in total). The drawing room has exquisite views of the gardens. In the private chapel, meanwhile, you'll find stained-glass windows and lavish Italian paintings. Join a guided tour for a thorough history of the place.
Next, venture out into the gardens. These were redesigned after the interior of the house in 1915 by the then-Marchioness. Wander through the Spanish and Italian Gardens, blossoming with Mediterranean plants. Find blooms native to this part of Ireland in the Shamrock Garden. Stroll through the Lily Woods and along the lakeside, home to Mount Stewart's swan community. Close to the lake is the vast Tir na nOg', where many of the family are buried. Pay your respects to the people who made this incredible place happen. Stay on the lookout for Mount Stewart's wildlife song thrushes, badgers, and incandescent butterflies and moths live here. You might also catch a glimpse of a seal on the adjacent Strangford Lough.
Finally, admire the Temple of the Winds, a small yet grand construction, complete with columns and balconies. It was built by the 1st Marquess, inspired by the Grand Tour that he undertook in his youth.
Mount Stewart House, Garden and Temple of the Winds are on the Ards Peninsula. It's roughly 26 kilometres from the centre of Belfast. There is an admission fee, which covers the house and grounds. The attraction is open every day except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
