About this property
Damson Cottage - LM1
The tranquil village of Waberthwaite, spectacularly situated between the mountains and the sea, is the setting for this holiday property.. The tranquil village of Waberthwaite, spectacularly situated between the mountains and the sea, is the setting for this wonderfully sympathetic barn conversion which has created two stylish and very comfortable holiday cottages that feature vaulted ceilings, original beams and stonework. These lovely cottage conversions with modern conveniences are surrounded by pretty gardens with a small stream running through the land. Orchard Cottage makes a perfect base for exploring the Western Lake District fells and coastal areas with their unspoilt countryside, coastal walks and cycle paths. This beautifully presented cottage provides a peaceful retreat or a fabulous base for exploring the spectacular western Lake District National Park and is just 4 miles from Muncaster Castle, gardens and owl sanctuary, and the pretty fishing village of Ravenglass with its Eskdale Miniature Steam Railway. Wastwater (voted Britain’s favourite view 2007) is a few miles further.
Waberthwaite village is a perfect location for a peaceful and restful holiday in the National Park and is the birthplace of traditional Cumberland sausage. The local family butcher have been producing Cumberland sausage in the village for over 175 years, and their village store is only a stone’s throw from Orchard Cottage. The local inn is a great traditional family pub serving good food and a great selection of beverages and is an easy short walk from the property. The estuary and Eskmeals Nature Reserve are within easy walking distance, half a mile from Orchard cottage down a quiet country road. Here the Rivers Irt and Esk merge and reach the Irish Sea which is a real haven of beauty and tranquillity. Take a walk along the foreshore and sand dunes with the mountains and fells behind you and enjoy the peace and quiet of this unspoilt area, which is a haven for many sea birds and wildlife - remember to listen out for the famous natterjack toad on your evening walks.
The 18th century Georgian town of Whitehaven to the north has a conservation harbour and marina. The Beacon Heritage Centre and Rum Museum portray Whitehaven’s historic past as a major trading port in the 17 and 18th century, where George Washington’s mother once lived. Take a mainline train journey from Ravenglass to Whitehaven and enjoy the dramatic West Coast scenery with the sea on one side and Lake District fells on the other, passing though St Bees and one of the longest rail tunnels in the UK. Further along the coast is Flimby.
Orchard cottage is the perfect location for a peaceful and restful holiday while the small village of Waberthwaite and surrounding area offers unspoilt countryside and coastal areas with unparalleled peace and tranquillity within the Natural Park. There is plenty to explore from the Norman and Roman sites and the spectacular Muncaster Castle to the pretty fishing village of Ravenglass and the windswept beach at St Bee’s to the towns along the coast, this lovely corner of Cumbria provides plenty to keep you busy. There is an abundance of gentle walks and cycleways, and with easy access into the heart of the Lake District National Park and all its activities, you could quickly become overwhelmed by choice. Shop 20 yards, pub 100 yards.
