About this property

A Soulful A-Frame Retreat with a Hot Tub

  • Other Things to Note — A Mountain Home

Moonlight Mountain House is beautiful and luxurious, but intentionally not a sterile resort. It is a home with soul, layered with antiques, art, curiosities, well-worn books and earmarked pages of poetry, and designed as an invitation to interact with the natural world around you.

Nature is very much present here. You may find a spiderweb rebuilt overnight, hear acorns or pinecones land on the roof, watch deer or wild turkeys cross the property, or see the forest floor transformed by wind and weather. Pine needles fall, leaves gather, and the mountain changes from one day to the next. For us, these aren’t imperfections—they are part of the magic of staying on 17 acres in the Catskills.

This house is best suited to guests who enjoy that experience and who take the time to prepare for their stay. We provide thoughtful pre-arrival messages, house information and helpful tips based on years of living here. We ask that guests read them fully before arrival—they contain the little details that make staying in a unique mountain home easy and enjoyable. We want you to have a wonderful stay, and arriving informed is an important part of that.

If you are looking for a conventional hotel or resort experience removed from the elements, Moonlight Mountain House may not be the right fit. If you want beauty with texture, comfort with character, and the rare pleasure of feeling genuinely connected to the world outside your window, you’ll feel at home here.

    Work-From-Home & Arrival Tips

For those who want to stay awhile, we have three desks, a monitor and strong WiFi for working from the A-frame.

The Catskills are a popular Friday escape from the city, so for a more relaxed arrival we recommend driving up on Thursday when possible and avoiding peak Friday traffic.

    Notable Nearby Locations

    Belleayre Mountain — 12 minutes

    Plattekill Mountain — 15 minutes

    Bovina Farm & Fermentory — 15 minutes

You can also spend the day without leaving the property: follow our private hiking trail through the woods to a beautiful meadow, then come home for an evening soak in the hot tub beneath the trees.

    The Space

Step inside to a soaring open-concept living space with floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the mountain landscape into the house.

The kitchen was curated by a Michelin-star chef and is stocked with high-quality cookware and generous counter space for people who genuinely enjoy cooking. Gather around the open dining area, curl up with one of the house’s books, play a game, or simply watch the forest through the windows.

Throughout the four-story A-frame you’ll find a collected mix of vintage pieces, original art, books and unexpected curiosities rather than cookie-cutter vacation-rental décor.

The primary bathroom offers one of our favorite experiences in the house: a large picture window overlooking the natural landscape, making even a bath feel immersed in the woods.

The home has four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms and accommodates a maximum of six overnight guests.

    The Neighborhood

Moonlight Mountain House sits on 17 private acres above the charming village of Margaretville, in the heart of the Western Catskills.

The area rewards exploration: mountain roads, farm stands, hiking trails, swimming holes, skiing, small towns, excellent restaurants and independent shops are all nearby. Belleayre and Plattekill are both approximately 15 minutes away, making the house equally suited to snowy winter weekends, long summer days and the spectacular transitions of spring and fall.

But some of our favorite moments happen right here—morning coffee while the mountain wakes, a walk to the meadow, watching wildlife pass through, or sitting beneath the trees as the light changes.
