Lovely
Lovely little hotel, very helpful and friendly. The only thing that would stop me going back in the hotter months is the lack of air conditioning - not a problem in January but it would be later in the year.

I cannot fault this hotel for the price I paid. The room was spacious, clean and the bed was comfortable. I didn’t use the facilities so I can’t say much but the roof top was never shaded and the restaurant always looked busy. Check in and check out was swift and staff were nice. I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel, would definitely stay again.

Great price, good location right on a street with loads of pubs d restaurant, short walk to the harbour. Very loud street noise from outside. Everything is extra in hotel, €10 for the remote in room, no towel for pool but for the price it is great value.

What it says on the can, good location, for me.
Other callers have whinged about ants (formigha) on balcony, getting into room. Appears this is well under chemical control. Anyway ants were there before humans reached the island. Everywhere kept scrupulously clean, usual Madeira standards. My only annoyance was the proliferation of Don't Do This/That signs. Really, if someone is inclined to wipe his boots with a towel, is a stupid sign likely to alter that inclination?

Sea view 180° from chapel.

Hotel Imperatriz
This is an excellent hotel for the price offered, we were self catering, the kitchen although small afforded the basic requirements for two people. We simply prepared small breakfasts at our own leisure. Staff really friendly and nothing to much to ask. We had a sea view and the only downside was that the local council collect the bins at 10:30 pm, which happens all round the area of Funchal so the vehicles can get access, so an unavoidable moan. Highly recommend this Hotel and we will stay again if we return to the Island in the future, easy access to the harbour 3 min walk down the road and then you have the whole promenade/marina ahead of you. WiFi in all rooms at no extra cost which was a bonus

Unpleasant
I chose this hotel for its location as I wanted to stay somewhere near the Funchal port. It satisfied that and that's about it. Even though it's inexpensive there are better options in the city of Funchal (though a bit farther from the port). The hotel and the rooms are old and unpleasant. There were nasty stains on the carpets that they tried to cover up with area rugs. The sheets and the towels seemed clean, but the overall feeling from the one-night stay I was left with was that of disgust. Avoid if you can, but not the end of the world if you have to stay here for a night.

A great value in a good location
We had a great holiday. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, going out of their way to suggest activities and excursions. The room was comfortable and clean, The location was great and close to numerous restaurants. If I ever come back to Funchal, Madeira, I would absolutely stay here again.

superb small hotel, ideally located 10mins walk to Funchal marina, another 10mins to the old town. A good selection of nearby restaurants and a very well stocked mini market, almost next door. Staff are very friendly and helpful, special thanks to Victor & Duerte. Lovely sun roof and pool, very peaceful. Excellent housekeeping in rooms which are equipped with kettle, microwave, two burner cooker and utensils.

Very nice hotel near to the centre of Funcal
This is a very nice hotel run by friendly staff. It is in the budget price range but is good value for money. It is within walking distance of the centre of Funchal and just up from the port area. The studio style apartments are well equipped, with a rooftop swimming pool. It is ideal for exploring the island and "doing your own thing".

Excellent budget accommodation in great location
Just back from a week at the Imperatriz (7th to 14th November) and overall found it excellent. It ticked all the boxes as regards what I wanted which was somewhere clean, comfortable, facility to make breakfast in the room, in a good location, public transit access (bus stops) nearby and reasonably priced. The rooms are cleaned daily and fresh towels provided. Bedding is basic; however, I found it comfortable and more than adequate. There’s a ‘mini kitchen’ in a cupboard consisting of a sink, kettle, large fridge, two ring cooker and most cooking implements with plates, cups, cutlery etc. (anything not there that you think you need simply ask at reception.) Everything I needed to make breakfast and more if I wanted. The location is ideal; 15 minutes walk from the centre of Funchal, there’s a Spar shop 50 metres away, another small supermarket less than two minutes walk away on Avenida do Infante. As well as Bernini’s at the front of the hotel there are numerous restaurants only a couple of minutes walk away, including Moynihan’s; an Irish Sports Bar that shows all the sport live and a casino less than 2 minutes walk away, if that’s your thing. There are two bus stops less than two minutes walk away on the Avenida do Infante, connecting you to a great public transport network. As regards the cost, I thought the Imperatriz was incredible value and I would recommend it to anyone seeking excellent budget accommodation in a great location.

Pleasant hotel, good value
Helpful staff, good value for nice room with balcony and flower bed. View is nothing special, though you can see the sea. Kitchenette was small but adequate. Small swimming pool and loungers on the roof. There are restaurants all around, a small SPAR supermarket outside and a small MEU Super supermarket a short walk away. There are lots of hotels in this area. One end of the harbour is a short walk downhill from the hotel. A short walk uphill is Avenido do Infanta where you can catch busses going east or west, and the airport bus.

Do check out things like availability of air-conditioning before booking (I didn't, assuming that this would be standard in a hotel in such a hot place in August...), and what you are getting with the roof-top pool, before booking!

Long awaited family trip
We were on a budget and I felt that for the price we paid for three apartments the hotel was more than adequate. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the rooms clean and of a good size. We enjoyed swimming in the pool on the roof which has excellent panoramic views of the sea and Funchal. If your on a budget I would certainly recommend this hotel as it is quite and well located. If it is luxury you are after then expect to pay a lot more for your accommodation.

Clean apartment hotel close to centre
This is a small, pleasant hotel located not too far from the centre of Funchal, a lovely park and the harbour. It had a lovely small roof garden with a small pool. There are at least three restaurants within a few minutes walk of the hotel. As we were self catering, we were pleased to find a Spar grocery shop on the same block. It seemed to be open all hours! There were more shops a very short distance away. There was a bus stop nearby. For information, the casino was within close proximity. When we asked for a toaster, it was provided.

Budget option - basic and gloomy
This was a budget option I booked at the very last minute, and it would be fair to say that I had a wonderful holiday in Madeira - but it was despite the accommodation rather than because of it. I found my second-floor room overlooking a building site rather gloomy, with some preposterous restrictions - for example, if you wanted a remote control to operate the TV (in 2013!) you had to borrow one from reception in return for a sizeable deposit. The cooking facilities were something of an afterthought, hidden away in a strange little cupboard, and did not make self-catering an enticing prospect. Fine for making breakfast, but I didn't want to cook evening meals in such cramped and basic conditions. The location of the apartment hotel was fine - it did mean a walk up a steep hill when returning from the old town at night, but my legs coped. There was a very nice view from the rooftop terrace, and there was absolutely no noise at night. Overall I would not recommend this hotel unless people are very clear that it's a budget option.

excellent location
The location was the most important criterion for me (close to Madeira friends houses); otherwise I would not recommend this hotel. Not really value for money. Badly needs some freshening up and staff is, if not unfriendly, not really very welcoming. I am staying in Funchal +/- 10 times a year, and I have stayed in far better places for less money !

The room we were first given had faulty electrics which tripped whenever cooker was used; no good to us as self catering facilities was a reason for selecting it. We were given a different room which was ok: even so the cooking facilities limited, no grill microwave or oven. Although a bit hemmed-in by other property and some in construction, it is handy for Funchal centre, bus services to Curral the West and round town; and in a location where more luxurious hotels are very much more expensive. On the subject of buses West, the stops for old-road services are farther away than those which use Rapida. Smart and clean and staff pleasant, will stay again (this was my 4th visit).

economy and convenience
If you are on budget and want good access to Funchal its atmosphere, shopping (ins supermarket) and transport. Then this small hotel is fine. The cooking facilities are limited but manageable. Dont expect a great view from your window, we were put in a back room and asked to pay an extra 10euros per day to move to the front of the hotel, but even then the hotel is set fairly low in the street and it can be noisy. The two english speaking managers were very helpful and friendly. Getting the hang of the bus routes takes a bit of doing especially to the western side of the island, but that adds to the sense of adventure. Nothings perfect, but we enjoyed our stay there and wolud go again.

Good basic accomodation.
Fair value for money. A good location in a quite side street yet close to town centre, seafront and restaurants. Clean and spacious, basic room with adequate self-catering facilities, good sized balcony with reasonable view. Good restaurant actually attached to the hotel.Handy for when too tired to walk into town. Friendly and helpful reception staff who spoke good english.

Clean large rooms with balcony
Clean large rooms with balcony to catch the evening sun. Kitchen a bit basic but who wants to cook much on holiday? Sink, 2 electric hotplates and fridge, all in 1m space! Good places to eat nearby without the 15 min walk into the centre of Funchal. Was a bit noisy on one night, am!ome people aren't considerate of others and don't want to hear a guitar solo and vocals at 5.30am! Parking underneath hotel 10euro a week, a bit tight but useful if you don't want on road pay parking, but manageable. Would recommend the hotel and stay there again.

Aparthotel Imperatriz, Funchal, Madeira-Convenient
Hotel is ideally situated just 7 mins walk into Funchal. We had a top floor side view apartment which was lucky as front can be noisy with traffic and bars. The large bedroom was cleaned daily and the reception staff and cleaners were all very nice. There was a big sheltered balcony. Also a safe (payable locally) and a TV with 4 English channels - 2 News, 1 TV Gold repeats and 1 showing old films. Rooms were adequately furnished, and had a table and chairs in addition to normal hotel room furniture. The self catering side of things were very basic with just two solid heating plates. Be aware there is no toaster, kettle, microwave or oven/grill. We had two saucepans and a frying pan. The kitchen utensils are very limited also. We had a soup ladle, but nothing to get a fried egg out with. There is enough crockery and cutlery. You will also need to take your own hairdryer. If you are prepared for the limited kitchen facilities, you can have a nice holiday. They do have a sun roof terrace with a small pool. The hotel is surounded by other Hotels so you will be overlooked. But for the location and the price, it is a good choice. If you do decide to eat out, the hotel has a restaurant and there are masses of eating places near by.

Functional hotel for our needs
We stayed at this hotel for 1 night only as we were due to board a cruise ship the next day. The apartment was clean and functional. We enjoyed having the balcony which was an extra bonus. Its good value for the price you are paying. We enjoyed a lovely meal and breakfast at the restaraunt which is adjoining this hotel. Our cruise ship let us down and I cannot speak too highly of the staff who helped us enormously to sort our flights back, Booked us into their other hotel which is in the North of the island and helped us hire car.

The noisiest room ever!
The receptionists were great, the location seemed ideal, the room clean (although stiflingly hot) and the rates very good. However, the room we had overlooked the street which on arrival was very quiet. But for whatever reason on this particular Sunday, we had the noisiest stay I've ever had in a hotel - cars, motorbikes and people shrieked beneath our window literally all night! If we had been staying longer (we were only there for the night) I would have requested another, interior room and a fan!!

Great location -the hotel is a bit run down though
The hotel is not in a great condition. There was water dripping into a bucket in the receptions lavatory. The first evening I found 30 ants in my sandwich in my room. My tooth brush had five ants in it(!) and the bathroom sink was crawling with ants. The hotels location is fantastic - very central with an ocean view and a beautiful park a block away. The view from the roof top pool is great: Selfie location :-) Most of the receptionists were very polite and helpful.

Dear guest, Thank you for your review. Having feedback from our guests help us improve our service quality standards. Regarding the ants, it's something absolutely strange. When the reception was informed, you were immediately moved to another room, no ants whatsoever. in order to minimize any inconvenience. This is something unforeseen and we took immediate measures to end that issue. We can inform you that specific room was taken care of and afterwards occupied. No ants whatsoever. About water dripping in reception lavatory, it was a leak in a major pipe which couldn't be solved late at night. That issue can happen everywhere, at anytime, to anyone so no major thing to be bothered with; "problem" is solved. Saying the hotel is not in good condition is a false argument. Malfunctions as said before can happen and we took measures to end it as soon as humanly possible. Kind regards,
