Make friends with penguins, watch river otters at play and learn how an octopus eats at this popular Utah attraction.
Take the family to the Living Planet Aquarium in Sandy, around 20 minutes’ drive from Salt Lake City centre, for a day out that’s educational as well as fun. This well-stocked aquarium is home to over 300 different species, from tiny, delicate sea horses to huge, scary sharks. The themed exhibits allow you to get a clearer view of the fascinating creatures that live in the murky depths of the ocean.The Ocean Explorer exhibit features a touch pool where you can stroke small leopard sharks and stingrays. Watch the feeding demonstrations to witness the eating habits of octopuses, and learn the life story of the giant green sea turtle which was brought to the aquarium after being attacked by a shark and hit by a boat.Anacondas, piranhas and alligators are some of the stars of the Journey to South America exhibit, but the main attraction has to be the Penguin Encounter. This 45-minute programme allows you a close-up view of the aquatic acrobatics of Gentoo penguins, known for their speedy, underwater prowess. This feature has to be booked in advance and is subject to an additional charge, but it’s well worth the ticket price to watch these graceful creatures swoop and dive through the water.The Discover Utah exhibit has a local flavour, with many indigenous creatures to view in their native environment. The lively antics of the resident river otters always draw an admiring crowd. Complete your day with a snack in the café, then head off to the gift shop to browse among the science-themed books, clothing, souvenirs and hobby kits.The aquarium runs a programme of special events and workshops which are open to the public, so check the website for details. It is open every day except Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in November) and Christmas. Free on-site parking is available, and public buses stop close by.
