About this property
Lovely 2-bedroom maisonette with garden close to the river in Barnes-Mortlake
Welcome to our bright and beautifully refurbished two-storey maisonette in leafy southwest London - a home that feels more like a little house than an apartment, with its own front door, private garden and plenty of space to spread out.
We are tucked away on a quiet residential street, with the picturesque River Thames just a two-minute walk away. From here, you can stroll along the river, grab a coffee or a drink at one of the lovely local pubs, or explore the nearby neighbourhoods of Barnes, Mortlake and East Sheen. We are also around 10 minutes from leafy Barnes and approximately 10 minutes from Chiswick by car or bike, with beautiful cycling and running routes along the river towards Kew and Richmond.
The house is bright, spacious and full of character, with original features thoughtfully preserved alongside a stylish refurbishment. It is arranged over two floors, with the main living areas downstairs and a lovely loft-extension bedroom and ensuite upstairs.
The garden
We are fortunate to have private green garden, reached by steps down from the balcony outside the kitchen. There is a patio with a coffee table and chairs directly outside the kitchen - the perfect place for morning coffee, breakfast in the sunshine or a quiet drink at the end of the day.
The living room
At the front of the house is a bright and comfortable living room with a large sofa and my grandmother's wonderfully comfortable armchair, a favourite spot for reading or relaxing.
There is a TV as well as a cinema sound system that you can connect your laptop to if you fancy a proper movie night.
The room also has a dedicated office area with a large desk and comfortable chair, making it a good space for working remotely. The WiFi is strongest here.
The upstairs bedroom
Upstairs in the loft extension is the second bedroom: a cosy, beautifully refurbished space with its own private ensuite shower room. It has been finished to a high standard and is a lovely, quiet place to retreat to at the end of the day.
There is a large mirror and chest of drawers. Please note that, due to the shape and space of the room, there is no wardrobe.
Also on this floor is our son's nursery, which we keep locked during guest stays.
The kitchen and dining area
The kitchen is a bright and practical space that opens onto the balcony and garden steps. It is a lovely place to have breakfast before heading out for the day, particularly when the weather is good and you can step straight outside to the patio.
The WiFi signal is weaker in the kitchen than in the living room, so we tend to think of it as a bit of a technology-free zone — although it is perfectly strong enough to connect to the Sonos speaker, so you can enjoy music while cooking or relaxing.
The location
The location is one of the things we love most about living here.
For getting into central London, the nearest train station is just a five-minute walk away, with regular trains taking you into central London. There are also local buses from the end of the road.
So while you feel wonderfully removed from the noise and bustle of the city, London is still very easy to reach.
Your hosts
My husband and I regularly share our home when he is working in Uganda. During these periods, my son and I either stay with my parents, who live just around the corner, or travel to East Africa ourselves, where I also work remotely part-time.
If I am in London, I will be only five minutes away and very happy to help with anything you need. If I am away in Africa, my parents are nearby and can help with any practical issues that might arise.
We want guests to feel comfortable and independent, but also reassured that someone is close by if you need anything.
A note about the neighbourhood
Our home is a maisonette, which means there is a downstairs neighbour and the gardens in the area are quite close together. This is a peaceful, family-oriented neighbourhood, and we are very considerate of our neighbours — particularly as the walls are not especially thick.
For that reason, this is not the right home for parties or loud gatherings. It is, however, a wonderful place to come and relax: a bright, stylish and spacious home with a private garden, the river on your doorstep and easy access to both London and the countryside-like calm of southwest London.
There is also occasional aircraft noise overhead, as planes fly towards Heathrow. They can be frequent at times and may bother guests who are particularly sensitive to noise. They are not unusually loud for London, but we prefer to mention them so guests know what to expect.
If you are looking for a comfortable, characterful home where you can enjoy the best of leafy southwest London while still being within easy reach of central London, we would love to welcome you.
