Cowboy Cabin: Peaceful, Remote, Serene and Dog-Friendly
About this space Peaceful and serene. The only sound is the breeze in the salt pine. No one around for miles… The Cowboy Cabin is a 1950s homestead on 5 acres of pristine California desert. It's the perfect place to gaze up at a meteor shower and pick the constellations out of the clear night sky. Soak up the afternoon sun then head inside to curl up on the super comfy bed and watch a movie. At dusk, be sure to head outside and watch the sun sink behind the mountains. Sunset is not to be missed. The space In the spring, everything is in bloom - the delicate wildflowers, the shrubs, the trees and the cacti. Perhaps you'll catch a glimpse of some of the area's wildlife: huge jackrabbits with tall ears, tiny fluffy bunnies, bats, doves, sparrows, roadrunners, quail, and coyotes off in the distance, howling in the darkness.
The Cowboy Cabin is 9 miles directly north of the town of Joshua Tree and one entrance to the Joshua Tree National Park for world-class hiking. We're just 7 miles from the Integratron. Please note: the last mile to the cabin is an unpaved packed dirt road. Just drive slowly, about 11 miles per hour and your car will handle it fine.
If being completely alone is of interest to you, then the Cowboy Cabin has you covered. The surrounding 100 acres are mostly undeveloped, very few cars travel through the area, and once the sun goes down, it's completely silent. Step outside in the still of the night and marvel at the Milky Way, hovering just overhead, visible to the naked eye and so close you feel like you could touch it.
Grab some firewood at one of the gas stations or grocery stores so you can make s'mores over the firepit while you gaze at the stars. We have two heaters to make the cabin super cozy in the colder months, one is an electric "wood stove" with dancing flames for a fireplace feel and the other is a small wall heater which warms up the space very quickly.
Please follow our directions to the Cowboy Cabin - as many dirt roads are very soft and cars can easily get stuck.
PLEASE NOTE: IN THE WINTER MONTHS (December through March) there is a possibility that we would need to cancel the reservation if there is a big rainstorm. The dirt roads around the cabin can get soft in the rain. So if a last minute cancellation will be too disruptive to your plans, please consider booking another property.
Check-in is any time after 3:00 pm, check out is 11:00 am. Check-in and out times can be flexible, so let us know of any special needs. Self check-in with a lockbox.
WiFi: We have one of the faster WiFi plans available: 2 megabit download / 768 kilobits upload (40X Dial-up) however the WiFi is transmitted via towers in the Landers area (not via cable) so stormy weather and even a windstorm can affect service. In the hot summer months, power outages can happen when the grid is overwhelmed.
All pets must be approved ahead of time. Please be sure to include a "pet" in your reservation details, that's how we charge the one time pet fee. We're only accepting guests with 1 to 2 dogs at the moment. (No cats). We charge a $20 pet fee for extra pet hair cleaning. Dogs should be on a leash when outside - owners are responsible for the safety of their pets. Please note: there are rattlesnakes, scorpions, centipedes, black widows and coyotes in the area. Rattlesnakes hibernate in the colder months, but please be aware that there are potential dangers. I know how much people love their pets.
Renovations of this property are still in process. The house has been thoroughly cleaned and is cleaned after each guest, but there are a few items that require more complicated repairs like replacing some Saltillo tiles and updating the shower. We appreciate your understanding!
Guest access You have access to the whole house and all 5 acres.
The area directly around the house is fenced. There is a trail that heads north from our driveway deeper into the property. You can take a walk along the dirt roads in the area. Just be careful when you're off road - realize you're out in real wilderness. Wear boots when hiking - there are snakes, especially in the warm months.
Please be aware that the desert is fragile, and most plants take a long time to grow if they are disrupted. No vehicles or off-road vehicles are allowed anywhere on the property other than in the driveway. Remember all the open land is someone's private property and being on them can constitute trespassing.
Please be considerate of others - no disruptive activity which would affect the quiet enjoyment of the desert for our neighbors and wildlife. This includes, but is not limited to: shooting guns, fireworks, flying remote controlled aircraft (such as drones), bright outdoor lighting, loud music. Off-road vehicles can be driven on the dirt roads in the area, however, please keep moving so that the noise does not create an annoyance for the neighbors. Drones can be flown over the 20 acres directly around the cabin. Please let me know you plan to bring a drone and I'll send you a map of the uninhabited 20 acres around the cabin. Please note that the 29 Palms Marine Base is nearby so use caution when flying remote controlled aircraft.
Please keep quiet outdoors from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM. Any loud noise, like talking or music during this time must be taken indoors and please close up the house. Noise carries easily in the desert.
No fires outside when it is windy and no fires outside designated areas. Hot embers can be carried a long way. The area is very dry and a fire could threaten the whole area. Please be extra careful with fire even when it is not windy. There is a hose on the south side of the house.
Other things to note We request that you bring slippers or flip-flops to wear indoors. There’s no way to keep all the dust and tiny pebbles out of the house, so wearing flip-flops will help keep your feet pain free and help keep the furniture clean.
You'll definitely want to wear shoes or flip-flops when you go outside - most of the vegetation is prickly, especially the cholla cactus, whose spines are blown around by the wind. There are ants and other critters, so watch your step. Just look down and make sure you're not standing on an ant hill.
The kitchen is fully stocked, just bring your own olive oil or butter, whatever you like to cook with. We have pots, pans, cooking utensils, knives, plates, utensils, glasses and mugs, as well as tupperware for leftovers.
The water is safe to drink and use for cooking/showering/etc. I cook with it, but personally, I prefer to drink bottled water.
We ask that you leave your perfumes and colognes at home. The sheets and towels are washed with hypoallergenic detergent and bleach. Sheets and pillowcases are super soft cotton jersey.
No smoking inside. No candles or incense please.
No illegal downloads. No big parties. No photoshoots or filming without prior authorization.
There are two exterior security cameras on site. One camera faces the driveway and the other camera faces the south side of the house toward the road. All windows have security bars and all doors have deadbolts as well as security screen doors.
Please note we are on a septic system, so only use septic safe paper products. (Septic safe toilet paper is provided.)

Cute little cabin on a lovely property. We stayed to get away from 4th of July fireworks because our dog is scared of them and we didn't hear a single one! It was very peaceful! Clean, organized, and well stocked. Great instructions and information.
Communication was great with the property. Owner was prompt, and answered every question it was very clean and lots of details were provided to help improve our stay. Enjoy being outside of the city area to help with some of our stargazing.
Nice desert retreat with my 2 kids. Everything was as described. Near-total isolation was a real change of pace. Integretron is worth a stop, even if you.re not paying for the sound bath.
I went for a weekend alone to see the Perseid meteor shower. Beautiful desert surrounds this property. The sky gave me a daytime lightning show and a nighttime meteor show. The house doesn't look like much on the outside but is clean and adorable on the inside. Comfy bed and everything I needed!
This quiet cabin met all of my needs as a single person needing a meditative desert healing retreat. The cabin is set up in such a way that you feel totally at home and feels personal enough as if it's your own little hideaway. The location is great as it is truly 'out in the desert' yet just a short yet 'desert open view' ride into town. Stars & Solitude all the way. The owner has put a lovely personality to the space complete with twinkle lights...what more can one ask for? Annalee was Best and attentive Host! Highly recommend.
Don't let the outside fool you. The inside is super clean and so adorable. A friend and I stayed here because it was close to integratron (which is a MUST)... The skies were incredible, there were no clouds so you can see stars up on stars up on stars, so gorgeous. We visited at the end of July so the weather was perfect to sit outside with a light jacket. We are definitely coming back here again when we go to integratron.
Communication with the owner was great, she responds quickly once booked and makes sure you received the welcome email. We were very impressed how organized the place was and how clean it was.
This cabin was exactly what I was looking for. It’s in “themiddleofnowhere” 1 1/2 mi down a sand rd off the main hwy in Landers. Here the desert is gridded with these rds, some more passable than others. Back in the day this was a homesteaded area where you got 5 acres and required to build a dwelling at least 400sq ft. This was one of those, I think. The outside looks a bit weather worn but the inside is as cute and functional as can be with everything you need. Know that it def is not the Ritz but absolutely the best if you’re looking for quiet, secluded solitude w/ all the amenities (good wifi, Sat TV, nicely stocked kitchen & bath) The owner was friendly and great at communicating every bit of info you could need. I think this place was the best part of my stay. Exploring JT National park and the whole area was wonderful but returning to our cabin to sit outside with a coffee or beer to listen to the wind and watch the sunset was like “Ahhhhhh..”

The location was so peaceful and beautiful. We stayed four days and never saw a car drive by. We could hear the wind blowing through the creosote and an occasional rooster crowing. Otherwise it was quiet. If you want solitude, this is the place. The cowboy cabin is comfortable and the decor is fun! We slept very well on a good bed. The shower water heated immediately which was nice because we were there in the winter. We used the kitchen for cooking and everything worked.
Stargazing was one of the reasons we chose this location and we were not disappointed. The milky way was visible and several constellations. Just beautiful. This was a wonderful retreat and we hope to return soon.
First, I’m thankful and grateful to Annalee’s Communication and Kindness for being very thorough with directions to the property. I was able ti use regular iPhone Maps just fine. But; definitely DRIVE SLOWLY once get into the dirt road! Especially if you’re arriving at night.
This spot was mainly used for my group and I to sleep at while attending Coachella weekend! So, I’ll be honest it’s not going to be the craziest or most luxurious, but it got the job done for what we needed. So if you need a cheaper place within the JT area or maybe plan going somewhere else Nearby, then this will get you by.
Overall, property was as described. Instructions were very clear (least to me they were), and Annalee was very kind and accommodating. Thank you again, Annalee!
Cowboy Cabin isn’t much to look at on the outside, but is as cute as a button inside! It was also plenty clean; and had everything we needed for our trip to visit The Integratron. Our only real challenge was that the AC had not been turned on prior to our arrival (which we felt it should’ve been); and it was WAY too hot to be in there! So after driving across the desert to get there, and looking forward to relaxing for an afternoon nap, we instead unloaded into the heat, turned on the AC, and had to leave and drive around in the air-conditioned car for hours until it cooled off enough to go in( and there’s really nowhere to go or much to do in the area spur of the moment because it IS remote! That was a bit of a disappointment that cost us half of our first day there; and even the first night in the cabin was still quite warm to sleep comfortably (we arrived right at 3 pm) on those “cozy” jersey sheets. And I’m no “princess and the pea,” but felt that important detail could have been handled better. So, be forewarned that the AC works great…it just takes a long time to cool the space when it’s really hot outside. By our first morning there it was fine though; and everything else was just great.
Seriously, the place IS charming; and it’s obvious the owner has paid attention to the vibe. There are no wine glasses, so bring your own if you want them. (We’d come back if AC is turned on in advance of check in!)
