Search Karkamu hotels

The best area to stay in Karkamu is the Old Town, known locally as "Alde Zaharra," which is the historic heart of the city.

This neighbourhood is the primary hub for visitors and is incredibly walkable. Its narrow, winding streets are lined with traditional Basque architecture, pintxo bars, and artisan shops. The Plaza Berria, a grand arcaded square, is a central meeting point, and the iconic Santiago Cathedral is a prominent landmark here.

For couples, Alde Zaharra is ideal for a romantic and culturally rich trip. You'll find yourselves steps away from countless pintxo bars, great for evening strolls and culinary exploration. The lively yet intimate atmosphere of the old streets makes for memorable evenings, and many boutique hotels are tucked away in historic buildings.

Solo travellers will also find Alde Zaharra a fantastic base. Its central location means you can easily explore the city on foot, joining pintxo crawls or simply soaking in the local life.

The best time to visit Karkamu depends on your preferences for weather and activities, but generally, the late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) offer the most pleasant conditions.

For those who enjoy warm weather and beach activities, July and August are ideal. You'll find plenty of sunshine and the sea is warm enough for swimming. However, these months are also the busiest, with more holidaymakers and higher prices.

If you prefer a quieter experience with comfortable temperatures for exploring the city and countryside, May, June, September, and early October are excellent choices. The weather is still mild, superb for walking tours or enjoying outdoor dining, and the main tourist crowds have thinned out.
