Great Stay
Fantastic stay. very nice beach.....swim, snorkel right from hotel. The good: Location - I would rather stay at Vakaloa (30+ minutes from Nuku'alofa than the other way around. Beachfront - Sloped beach.... and coral, but sandy (crushed coral).... can walk barefoot Kayak - They were free to borrow Snorkeling - Free snorkel gear. You could see some fish right out front....but a great spot about a ten minute walk up the beach. Bicycle - Free bicycle to cruise around the area. Accommodations - Great room with fridge, ample space and a killer view of the ocean, beach and surf break Food - The meals were good Staff - The staff were friendly and very helpful The bad: Dining - Other than the resort, there are not any places nearby to dine. This was not an issue for us as the food was good and only stayed a few days. The in-between: Internet - The coverage was only by front desk and dining room and not in rooms and was not all that great....... but you are in Tonga, on a beach, in a beautiful area....go enjoy the surroundings and this magical location Continental Breakfast - Toast, fruit, cereal, instant coffee, tea. It was fine but not amazing Cost to get there from airport - It was a little over $30 (US) to get there and a little over $15 (US) to get to Nuku'alofa Staying in the Ha'atafu region (Northwest peninsula) of Tongatapu (the main island) was a better decision for us than staying in Nuku'alofa. Especially loved the beach activities and quiet setting.

The staff and service were excellent. Rooms were very nice and tidy. Originally though, we were booked into the family room with a seaview (room 12) which was great but only problem was that when it rained, water leaked into the room and wet the floor because the windowsills have a design flaw that doesnt allow the water to drain out. I assume rm 12 is the only room with this osdue and I hope they fix it soon. It was our misfortune that it just happened to be raining heavily the day we booked in else on a sunny day the room is perfect. Staff were great in quickly shifting us to room 5 with a garden view once we informed them of the leak. This room was nice as well and had no issues except the air conditioning wasnt working. Luvkily tihey had a massive fan in tbe room that we could use to keep cool. Other than that, this resort was perfect. Highlight is the buffet dinner and cultural show on wednesdays and fridays and buffet lunch sunday. Dinner was delicious and the culture dances and fireshow was great...also loved the live band and music selection.....The complimentary Continental breakfast of toast, cereals, fruits and tea, coffee and juice was nice although I wish they would include 1 hot dish like eggs with it. If you wanted anything hot like eggs, bacon, hash browns, sausages etc, then u have to pay for it. 15 paanga was cheapest hot item. Overall was a good stay.

Perfect Getaway
Amazing! My husband and I enjoyed our stay. The accommodation furnishings are elegant and sturdy. Breakfast is filling and it is a great place to getaway and unwind. A note for those who like to swim at night/early morning, take a torch/battery lamp with you as a light source! Malo Vakaloa

Given Room 4, this had no garden view and no ceiling fan, avoid room 4. Moved to rom 8, still no ceiling fan and no tv. Moved to room 11 where there was a fan and a tv, but it only had 2 fuzzy channels and no satellite channels. Thats the negatives out of the way. The positives are that this resort is in a beautiful location, stunning views out to the reef and sea and on two of our mornings we watched Whales swim by whilst eating breakfast. The breakfast uis an excellent buffet of fruit cereals and toast and hot food can be bought seperately. Dinner portions are large and filling but could do with a few more veggie options. We stayed for the Dinner and Show and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had veggie food cooked for us and salads and desert from the buffet. Lotu in the kitchen provides amazing service, he is a star. We also hired a car for a day costing $80 tops. Do this as soon as you can as they do run out of cars! We would love to return to this resort, relaxing, good food, snorkelling and whale watching. Finally we caught the local bus from Muku'Alofa to the Resort, great ride and cost $2. There is a local village 5 mins walk from the Resort with two small shops and awesome fresh bread.

What a hidden piece of paradise! Our family recently stayed at Vakaloa for a family holiday. The staff were so attentive and kind! Each of them knowing our children’s names by the end of our trip. The rooms and eating area are well kept. The setting on the balcony as we ate breakfast was beautiful! The quiet and peaceful sounds of the ocean and watching the whales swim by was more then we could have imagined! Food was a taste of home (USA) which was helpful with picky eaters! The beach area is clean and views are wonderful! The staff were willing to help us with everything! Booking rentals for a car and giving us info on all your and activity around the island! Sione and Marian have a beautiful establishment! We are grateful we found you on Expedia!

Service was excellent staff went above and beyond, rooms were spacious and clean, beach was beautiful we had full use of kayaks, definitely take sea shoes as it’s rocky. You can see whales beyond the reef just amazing to see. Breakfast was standard but fresh fruit every day was a treat! best resort on the island from what we saw also with great island night and great food, highly recommend

This is probably the nicest resort on the island! When we arrived we were wowed with the stunning ocean views and immediately taken care of by staff like Lotu. The staff here really understood good customer service. We had a complimentary continental breakfast which included great coffee, juices, an assortment of cereals and toast. It was also very easy to park our hire car on site.

Me and my mother stayed for 6 nights and I loved it, especially my mother (she’s also really picky but to my surprise she rated this by far the BEST resort/accommodation in tonga) Nothing can compare to Vakaloa, from their amazing and friendly staff to their delicious food not forgetting the breath taking view you get from sunrise to sunset! Every morning we were greeted by all staff, breakfast was never a let down. Their Wednesday and Friday buffet & show was AMAZING! Room service was really good too. One of their staff I think his name was Kasi was really out standing!!! I honestly highly recommend this resort to anyone travelling to Tonga! It is kinda far from town but it’s honestly the most peaceful place in Tonga! Thank you so much Vakaloa, this will not be my last time staying with you!! Here’s to many more lol

Loved that it was on the beach, but it was so far from the airport and so far from town, which could be a problem because the kitchen is often closed for special events. The food was delicious when they were open and they actually took us to a restaurant one evening.

By far the best resort in Tonga!
I travelled with my 4 daughters to Tonga and first stayed at a 4star Hotel in town then moved the West of the island of Tongatapu and spent 2 nights at Vakaloa. We were well looked after from the time of check in to check out. The Staff and owners Marion and John ensured that our stay was pleasant and comfortable. They moved us to the rooms closer to the beach and allowed us to check out late as our flight was departing Tonga at 1145pm. The rooms are very clean and breakfast was great with local organic fruits and fresh bread, cereals and eggs cooked to your preference and their omelette was so yummy. Vakaloa is a family friendly Resort and the best in the Island. We instantly felt in love with the amazing ocean views, kids swam everyday and they have kayaks free to their guests to use. I highly recommend Vakaloa for the beautiful seaview location, cleanliness, friendliness. It is a family friendly resort and the Staff are at the premises after hours for any emergency. We now call Vakaloa home and I had such a great experience that I have now booked to stay there again in July. It is a great place to escape to with scenery to die for. Thank you John, Marion and your lovely Staff for making our stay a memorable and pleasant one.

Lovely, comfortable, clean rooms, filling breakfasts each morning, and a gorgeous beach to swim or snorkel in. The facilities are very well presented at Vakaloa but it's the staff that really make this place special. Everyone is so warm, welcoming and friendly. Beautiful setting right on the beach. The beach itself is stunning and lovely for swimming. Amazing view from the deck and we had many enjoyable breakfast and dinners on it. (The sunsets were to die for) Buffet dinner and show night was a must do!! Great food and fantastic show. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Wish we stayed longer than a night
Enjoyed our 1 night at Vakaloa. It's a bit of a trek from the airport but worth it if you're staying more than a few nights. All the staff was friendly and helpful. Food at the restaurant was good and the free breakfast in the morning was a nice touch. The beach is long and empty but for swimming bring some water shoes as the bottom is small coral and tide pools. They have a buffet and show every Wednesday and Friday night that looks pretty fun.

There was a lot of construction noise until it was dark as they were building new rooms. Whilst it was right on the beach there was nothing to sit on and no equipment to use although I believe they have just purchased kayaks, paddleboards etc that are arriving soon. We ordered a room with twin beds, when we arrived there was only 1 bed. They bought over a small single mattress that was marked and then a base covered in a fitted sheet. You could see through the sheet that the base was all ripped underneath. This was put on the floor without any legs. There was no telephone in the room or any information and there wasn't anyone onsite at night so I wouldn't like to have any sort of medical emergency. The bathroom door didn't close and it smelt really bad like sewage was sitting in the pipes or something. No hairdryer or iron, no pictures on the wall, mismatched curtain rods. All VERY basic. The breakfast wasn't served until 8 and it wasn't ready at that time. For your toast there was only 1 jam and the first morning it was just in a jar on the table that everyone used, later on it had been put in a bowl but that was the only choice of spread. We booked for the buffet and cultural night and the hotel guests were put out the back on the balcony. The dining room was all locals and they did prize giving and birthday greetings. It felt like being at someone's 21st that you didn't know. We couldn't see the stage but were told we could stand at the back. There were 400 people there.

Hotel's been damaged from cyclone gita. We didn't get our room we paid for the first night which was disappointing. No privacy, no fan and the beds are hard as rocks. Very uncomfortable sleep.

What an awesome resort to stay with family. We stayed at Vakaloa for a family wedding and The owner John and his wife were the best hosts we could ever wish for. Breakfast was a morning highlight sitting and facing the beautiful clear ocean. The buffet nights are not to be missed - make sure you book so you don’t miss out. The rooms were fantastic, spacious, clean and we had nice hot water showers. Nothing it too much for the staff at Vakaloa so accommodating and caring. From airport pick up to drop off. Thank you Vakaloa for the best family trip ever. We will be back soon.

Great location for watching whales and sunsets
Suffered badly in the cyclone six months ago and repair work still in progress so can't be too critical. All staff friendly and helpful, and some appear in the twice-weekly cabaret/dinner evenings which are mainly attended by locals. Not much else to do in the area and much of the beach at low tide is coral rock so take water-shoes.

The staff are very friendly and helpful
We found the staff were very friendly and helpful. They did all sorts of things to make the visitors feel very welcome. Sita, in particular, was wonderful. She's a real asset to the resort. Kava night was great. Vakaloa is right next to the beach and there is a good surf break out on the fringing reef which is only about 100 metres paddle from the shore. The owner, John, is a lovely guy and very generous.

The hotel is being completely refurbished after the big cyclone so its basically a brand new hotel! Awesome location, watch whales frolicking from the restaurant/bar area while you sip on a perfect pina-colada! Meals were good and big! and the beers were nice and cold! Show night was awesome- Tongan feast, good live band and cool floor show afterwards from the talented staff.

Wonderful stay!
We honestly didn’t know what to expect when visiting Tonga. Upon arrival at Vakaloa Beach Resort we had traveled for 43 hours so our initial impression was cautionary. However, that was quickly overcome by the warm hospitality the rest of our stay here. The resort is a family effort and the owner John and wife Maryann are warm and friendly (like all Tongans we discovered). Daily you see his children helping around the facilities and it’s clear that John is an entrepreneur and excellent manager looking after all his employees. To name just a few of this magnificent team: Siva, “O”, and Manu. They took the time to learn our names and truly made us feel like a part of their family. And they were so accommodating, from making an early breakfast so we could strike out on a whale swim adventure to renting us a car (and not even charging us one day when we only went to town for dinner). It was a quiet stay and not crowded at all (we had the place to ourselves a few days). There is some ongoing construction making repairs and improvements after a Category 5 cyclone did major damage in Feb 2018, but we did not mind the occasional noises from this and it was never in the evenings or early mornings. John is working to rebuild after this storm and this is a testament to the character and determination of this family. Tonga was a magical experience for us overall and the Vakaloa Beach Resort team played a large role in that assessment. This is the place you need to stay!

This is a wonderful resort. They are busy remodeling after a typhoon hit (cat 4) in Feb '18. Improvements look great. The staff is very friendly and very helpful. Savi went out of her way to make sure we were well taken care of. The buffet dinner show that we attended on Wed. night was awesome which also included the fire dancers! They offered a whole roasted pig that was the best ever! The location is far out from downtown but don't let that deter you since they offer shuttle service and rental cars. They can book any tour you want. The beach is beautiful and their is great snorkeling available. Is is great value for the money We are talking about how we can go back.

good spot
we had a nice big beach front room with plenty of space, great location with a nice lagoon to swim and snorkel, surf break is directly out in front on the reef and very popular. you have to book in for dinners and Sunday it pays to either stay put or go out to Fafa island cause everything is closed. we hired a car from John which was a good idea so we explored the whole island. recommend taking rock shoes and snorkels etc as I don't think the resort has them anymore.
