With more than 5,000 birds from 380 species, this dedicated bird park is one of the largest in the world.
Opened in 1971, Jurong Bird Park is a large-scale zoo dedicated entirely to birds. It has been providing Singapore locals with welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city and educating them in the ways of conservation and environmental protection ever since.Hopping onto one of the guided trams that run throughout the park is a good way to get an overall impression of the place. The tram drivers provide a fascinating commentary on the zoo's various inhabitants, including the 29 threatened species housed and protected here, and you can use your whistle-stop tour to single out the ones that you think warrant a closer look.Across Jurong Bird Park, huge enclosures have been designed to replicate the respective habitats of each bird species. One of the more popular stops is the Australian lorikeets massive 9-storey flight enclosure, known affectionately as the Lory Loft. Visitors to this enclosure hold out handfuls of nectar to attract the cheeky parrots in a flurry of bright colours. Elsewhere, the African Waterfall Aviary consists of a 30-metre waterfall populated by hundreds of freewheeling African birds. As well as the opportunity for a good giggle, Penguin Coast also gives visitors a chance to feed these playful birds during its daily penguin encounter sessions. Alternatively, if you fancy something a bit more dramatic, head over to the Kings of the Skies show where eagles, hawks and other birds of prey wheel overhead.Situated in Jurong, the bird park is 30 minutes to the west of Singapore city centre. It's easy to get here by car, with ample parking nearby, or via the plentiful public transport options. Jurong Bird Park is open daily and a small fee is charged on entry.
