What a pleasant surprise this was! So clean and tastefully decorated with the most pleasant hosts. Overlooking the ocean from the loft bedroom was lovely too. Highly recommend!

Mr
A beautiful location with views to the sea. Melanie was a very helpful host, friendly, with good local recommendations and suggestions. Location was quiet and private.
Melanie and Don were friendly, helpful, and accommodating. With a group of 7 adults, the space was cozy and a good fit for us. The shower pressure was great, and the beds were comfortable. We enjoyed the beautiful, serene location and appreciated that Don and Melanie were available to provide the amenities that we needed to have a fantastic vacation (use of their BBQ, Nespresso pods, the use of their outdoor dining area, etc.) Thank you both for making our trip so enjoyable!
We had great time at Don and Melanie’s place. Even though the place is directly beside their house, it feels very private and has an incredible view of the ocean from the second floor. Melanie and Don made us feel like we are at home, offering us delicious blackberry smoothies with greek cherries for breakfast and wine for dinner.
The kids could use a large trampoline and practice badminton in the backyard, and they had fun playing Life board game indoors. Melanie is an expert when it comes to local beaches and will share her secrets about a hidden waterfall if asked. We will definitely come back.
Check-in went very smoothly. We arrived slightly ahead of schedule, and Melanie and Don were very gracious in not minding our 20 min early check-in! The kitchenette has everything needed to cook a simple meal!I assumed because of the title of the listing that hottub access was included, and it was totally my mistake that I didn’t closely read the contract sent, but I likely wouldn’t have booked if I’d known it wasn’t. It is a beautiful property in an amazing area, but if it is tricky to swing the price range I’d recommend people be more attentive when booking to make sure they understand! There were so many amazing games, books, and movies available, and my dad and I had a lot of fun! The bathroom door is a little tricky to fully close, and the railing at the top of the loft ladder is fairly unstable so I was a bit nervous at that part every time— I made it up and down just fine, but my dad (senior aged) popped up just to look and had a hard time getting back down, so am hopeful it will get stabilized in the future. As far as issues go, nothing that was unmanageable or won’t be easy to fix right up, so if this is in your price range I HIGHLY recommend a stay!Melanie was really amazing and seems to put her heart and soul into the property— Don also seems like a gem! I appreciate Melanie’s kindness and understanding so much when I used the hottub (because I’m a bad contract reader…) and am really thankful it worked out so that we could complete our time on the property.

Lovely place to stay!
This property was very lovely, peaceful and quiet. It is well maintained, and very clean. There is only a small fridge to store your perishable food, and two convection hot plates to cook on. If you're not doing too much in the kitchen, it's ok. Situated about 10 minutes past Sooke, and looking out across the road to the Juan de Fuca Strait. The hosts Don and Melanie were very friendly, and provided great customer service. The large guest room is situated on the top floor and access is by a murphy ladder. This room is the only area within the unit where you can get a view of the water. My husband and I were not comfortable climbing the ladder to bed and getting up in the night, so we stayed on the main level and there is a murphy bed available. The murphy bed was very comfortable, the pillows very comfy. So we didn't mind at all. The suite is situated at the back of their garage, right next to their house. We were invited to use their back yard fire pit and use their BBQ. Some of the activities we enjoyed were spending time on Gordon's Beach, Whale watching out of Sooke, visiting the Salt Spring Island. I would recommend this property to friends or relatives, informing them that the upper level is only accessible by a ladder. If you don't mind the ladder, and don't need a stove to cook on or a larger fridge, this place could be perfect for you!
It was lovely and peaceful, roomy, private, perfect for practicing and companionship. The option for exquisite dining with the host and hostess offers, was delightful.
Note: The driving route to town is closer to 10-15 min at the speed limit.
Don & Melanie were fantastic hosts! The property is beautiful and in a great location. Would definitely stay here again. Don't miss out on the wood fired pizza experience - you won't be disappointed!
Whatever was lacking in the suite was more than made up for by the very beautiful surroundings and great access to the ocean. About 100 meters down the road is a trail which takes you 50 meters down the shore to Otter Point where you can sit at a table and watch the Sea lions swim by on their fishing excursions. The upstairs room has a great view of Juan de Fuca Strait. Don and Melanie are the consumate hosts. Melanie spent lot of time sharing her knowledge of the area and encouraging us to visit the areas that she ranked high on her list to see. But the most special surprise was the meal that she prepared and hosted with Don and gifted to us when she found out that we were in the middle of a struggle with my wife's cancer. It was a very compassionate gesture and very much appreciated.
The property was beautiful and the rental was welcoming and comfortable! My kiddo loved the stairs to the sleeping loft! So many place close by to explore. Perfectly quiet location for an amazing and peaceful vacation.
This was a great little spot, just what we were looking for on our road trip around the island. My sister, her 2 kids and myself stayed for 3 nights. The kids loved the loft and the trampoline, my sister and I loved the ocean view from the loft and having our coffee out back under the gazebo. Don and Melanie were very friendly and attentive and Melanie even shared her homemade salmon roe with our complimentary welcome breakfast complete with garden raspberries and fresh baked bread. Though technically walking distance to nearby Gordon Beach we opted to take the car as the road is quite busy with little to no shoulder in places. The place was very clean and well equipped with everything we needed. Keep in mind there is no oven in the kitchen, but there is an induction burner. The only hiccup we encountered was upon booking as I had originally wanted to bring my dog and filtered my search for properties that accepted dogs. They asked for a description of my dog to make their evaluation. I was declined, but the only information they had to go on was her breed. My guess is they are opposed to large dogs and possibly shedding (I have a Lab). They didn't specify, but when I questioned their decision told me I could crate her in their garage if I needed to bring her. I suspect they only accept small dogs, however they don't specify this up front and just say they need to pre-screen.

Lovely Getaway
I have used VRBO for many years, stayed in many places, and met lots of interesting people, but I have never had such an exceptional hosting experience as I did with Mel and Don. Mel set up the badminton net and the hammock for us, let me "help" her taste her different kombucha teas she had brewing, and gave us excellent advice on where to find the best kid-friendly beaches. The stairway and upstairs of the apartment was a fantastic hideaway for the kids who were very reluctant to leave on our check-out day.
I had read that the apartment did not have an oven, but I forgot and bought a frozen pizza for the kiddos. Mel baked it in her oven for us the night we showed up! I visit Victoria every year and walk onto the ferry so that I don't have a car. We drove this time and I wanted to find a spot a little ways out of the city. This lovely getaway in Sooke was just what we were looking for.

Great Loft For The Kids!
The loft is great for kids and the yard was also great for them to run off some energy. The location was perfect for exploring the south coast!

Great Hosts
We loved the space and the hosts were wonderful. From the loft room you can see across the straight all the way to the Olympic mountains. We chose the bread option and could watch Melanie bake the bread in the wood-fired oven on the back porch. The bread was great. We passed on the pizza dinner because we like to cook for ourselves. However, later Melanie said she had some leftover ingredients from some other event and asked if we wanted to try one of her pizzas. We agreed and it was one of the best pizzas I’ve tried. It was a flat, sourdough crust with red sauce, mozzarella, prime cut steak, caramelized onions, arugula, fresh tomatoes and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. We would recommend the space and we will definitely stay here again when we return for another visit.
