Created as a Feng Shui barricade to protect the residents of the Forbidden City, this park was the stage upon which the last Ming emperor met his tragic fate.

Take a break from the crowded metropolis and spend an afternoon under the shade of pines and cypress trees in one of Beijing’s most beautiful landscaped gardens. Jingshan Park was built in line with the ancient principles of Feng Shui as a protective barrier for the Forbidden City, which lies directly to the south. It was constructed using mud dredged from the waterways around the city and, from its 46 metre summit, provides some of the best views in Beijing.Created nearly a millennium ago, the park was a place of peace and reflection for the leaders of many of the great Chinese dynasties. In a dramatic twist of fate, it is also believed to be the spot where the last Ming Emperor took his own life as rebels swarmed the capital in 1644. A memorial stone dedicated to his memory is laid at the foot of the hill, on the eastern side of the gardens.Jingshan Park has been open to the public since 1948, and serves as a place of rest and recreation for the busy city dwellers. At weekends they gather here to sing, dance and play on musical instruments. There is a variety of public exercise, from skipping to Tai Chi, which you are welcome to join in.Entry to the park is inexpensive. For a small fee you can wander amongst the colourful flowerbeds before climbing the stone steps to the top of one of Beijing’s largest hills for breath-taking views across the city. Make your way round the five ornate pagodas which line the brow of the hill. These once housed five Buddhas, each representing one of the five tastes: acid, spicy, bitter, sweet and salty. Sadly, as with many of China’s great monuments, they were looted during the opium wars and the statues were stolen or destroyed.Jingshan Park is situated just north of the Forbidden City, making it easy to get to by bus. Incorporate it into a visit of the Forbidden City or other local landmarks such as nearby Beihai Park. Alternatively, bring some snacks and take an afternoon to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of this beautiful shady spot.
