Visit the Jeronimos Monastery to see a stunning monument marked with decorative façades and spires. This architecture is a shining example of late-Gothic design with a hint of Renaissance ornamentation. Inside, walk the same halls once inhabited by the Hieronymite monks, a sombre Catholic sect that prayed for the safe return of Lisbon’s seafaring explorers.
The monastery was built in honour of the successful navigation to India by the pioneering Portuguese mariner, Vasco da Gama. Its location marks the same spot where da Gama’s crew spent their last night before embarking on the famous voyage. His tomb lies inside the monastery entrance.
Also near the entrance, look to a statue of Henry the Navigator and admire this tribute to the 15th-century prince. Stroll the interior of Jeronimos Monastery and enjoy the decor. Each column inside is decorated with carvings of marine symbology, from coils of rope to sea monsters and coral. At the entrance to the former refectory, spot scenes from the biblical story of Joseph depicted in wall decorations.
As you walk, notice the church’s careful planning. The monastery cloister spans 180.4 by 180.4 metres (55 feet by 55 feet). A number of side porticos around the church are well worth a visit. Each section is marked with unique gables, pinnacles and hand-carved statues. Diogo de Boitaca and João de Castilho, two of Portugal’s most recognised architects, were the masterminds behind this cloister’s design.
Architecture buffs will notice a shift from Renaissance to Gothic styles in the main portal. French sculptor Nicolau Chanterene carved sculptures around this room, such as a kneeling Queen Maria of Aragon and a depiction of King Manuel protected by an ornate canopy. Each depiction is surrounded by figures of patron saints. Spot St. Jerome and John the Baptist amongst the holy scenes.
