Visit the birthplace of Ireland’s most famous whiskey, and discover the magic than turns grain into “liquid gold”.

Discover the history of Ireland’s most famous whiskey at the Old Jameson Distillery, and learn about the processes that make this amber liquid, held in the distinctive shamrock-green bottles. Of course, you’ll also have the chance to sample this “Water of Life” developed by the Jameson family, under their motto “Sine Metu” meaning “Without Fear”.

Jameson may be Ireland’s most famous whiskey, but its inventor, John Jameson Sr, was actually Scottish. He established the distillery in 1780, and over the decades it passed down through the generations. John Jameson aimed for the highest standards of spirit production, using a process of triple-distillation, instead of the double-distillation of Scotch whiskey or single distillation of American bourbon. It is then aged in oak barrels for an unmistakable vanilla aroma.

Although Jameson is still vatted in Dublin, it is now distilled in Cork. The museum occupies the site of the original Dublin distillery. Tours are run every 25 minutes, starting with a fascinating presentation on the history of the brand and the distillery. You will then be able to examine the vast stills and heating equipment that has been opened up to reveal the workings within, capable of transforming simple grain, yeast and water into the prized liquid.

Finish your trip with a visit to the Jameson Discovery Bar, where you’ll be treated to a measure of the whiskey, neat or with a mixer depending on your preference. Test your palate with the tasting competition, where you’ll have to distinguish between different world-famous brands. Or for those seeking to refine their knowledge, there is a premium whiskey tasting experience during which you will learn about taste, nose and finish. A Jameson Irish Whiskey Taster Certificate is awarded to all those who attend.

Head to the gift shop to pick up some whiskey-related souvenirs, or treat yourself to a meal in the museum’s restaurant. If you are visiting in the months between April and October, you can reserve a place at one of the Irish Shindig Nights with entertainment, food and, most importantly, whiskey.

The Old Jameson Distillery is open daily. Buses run to Arran Quay, and trams stop at Smithfield, both only a short walk from the museum. The hop-on, hop-off bus stops here as well.
