Join the crowds of sun-worshippers at this world-famous beach, the epitome of Rio’s outdoor lifestyle.

Rio de Janeiro’s legendary Ipanema Beach is located in one of the most exclusive parts of the city. Its reputation reached far and wide with the release of the track “The Girl from Ipanema” in the 1960s, sparking many a daydream of sand, sea and beautiful people.

On any day you visit, you’ll certainly be amongst a crowd drawn from the upper echelons of Rio society. Beach-goers are certainly keen to stay in shape, so as well as the customary sun-worshipping, you’ll always find beach volleyball and football games in progress. If you are not feeling energetic enough to join in, lie back on your towel or sun lounger and wait for one of the many beach vendors to bring along a refreshing coconut water or heady caipirinha, a cocktail made with the Brazilian spirit Cachaça.

The white sands of Ipanema Beach stretch almost 3 kilometres east from the twin mountain peaks of Dois Irmãos, or Two Brothers, between the neighbouring beaches of Leblon and Copacabana. Life guard towers, known as “postos”, stand at regular intervals along the beach, and here is where you will find the changing and toilet facilities, available for a small fee.

The sea conditions along Ipanema can be quite variable, and the currents are quite strong. During winter months, the waves can hit over 2.5 metres. Of course, this creates great conditions for surfers, a common sight up and down the coast.

Back from the beach front, you’ll find some of the top restaurants and bars in the city. During the day, take a seat on an outside terrace with a coffee or a cold beer, and spend an enjoyable hour or two watching the world go by. You also find excellent shopping opportunities, with the best of the boutiques lining Rua Vinicius De Morais.

As the evening draws in, join the crowds on the beach front to admire the stunning site of the sun setting into the Atlantic. It’s not uncommon for spontaneous applause to break out in celebration of the event. The fun continues long into the night, with Ipanema’s clubs and bars busy until the early hours.

Ipanema Beach is 30 minutes, traffic permitting, from downtown Rio by taxi or bus. Car parking is scarce and costly. If you plan to visit during Carnival or over New Year’s Eve, make sure you book well in advance.
