"Our stay here was below the standard I would have expected for the price. On the positive side, the location was good and very convenient for getting around. Breakfast was acceptable, with a reasonable selection, and the staff in the breakfast area were friendly and welcoming. However, the overall condition of the hotel was very tired and in need of significant investment. While reception staff were polite at check-in, there was limited engagement beyond that. The room didn’t quite match expectations from the advertised photos, particularly those showing sea views. Our window had metal screws in the frame to prevent it from opening too far, the curtains were noticeably sun bleached, and there were maintenance issues such as a leaking bath and damaged plaster. We also suspected the room may previously have accommodated pets, as my husband, who has mild allergies, experienced some discomfort with his asthma during the stay. When we requested an iron and ironing board, these arrived without a cover for the board, so we had to improvise by using a towel. Another point to note was the £10 per day charge for on-site parking, which felt a little steep given the overall condition of the property. Overall, you could see that this hotel was way past its prime but still has potential to be great again, but requires significant refurbishment."

Richard, the owner, leads a first-class team who clearly take pride in what they do. From the moment we arrived, the welcome was genuine and personable, and that level of care remained consistent right through to our departure. The on-site bar is both cosy and well-stocked, and the food deserves special mention. The menu focuses on high-quality, home-cooked dishes done exceptionally well. The handmade burger was a highlight—easily one of the best I’ve had—and it convinced us to stay for breakfast the following morning, which was equally impressive. In terms of value, service, and overall experience, The Royal Marine Hotel delivers on every level. It’s the kind of place you look forward to returning to—and we certainly will be. Highly recommended."

"The hotel is in a fantastic location. It is extremely handy for accessing all the main amenities in the town. It has fantastic views looking out to sea. My room was very comfortable, the food in the restaurant was good and the staff were all very helpful."

"This is a 4 star hotel however I'd give it a 2 at best. The staff were lovely and could not have been nicer, however the room was very basic. The bed was uncomfortable, the room had a kettle and very basic tea and coffee options. Also, we arrived and was told that no food would be served that night in the hotel but were given no prior warning to this. We then expected a full breakfast (included in the cost) but again, woke to a breakfast of cereal and pastries. At no point did anyone make us aware that there would be no hot food in the morning as well. Probably wouldn't recommend as we chose this hotel over other similarly priced hotels in the area, but fear I made the wrong choice."
