The Bear is a lovely old coaching inn and has loads of character which I love. The team including Carina and Lesley were particularly helpful during our stay. I would highly recommend The Bear

Unsatisfactory accommodation

We put 3 sub contractors into your hotel for 2 nights. One bathroom was dirty with mold & “mushroom” growing! One room had food stains on the carpet. General cleanliness & attention to detail very poor. Main parts of hotel & food good!

Rooms are nice, if a little small, but historic old building. Toilet cover was too small for basin and the shower curtain positioning designed to hem you in and make the shower feel tiny. Food in adjacent pub not good (and literally half the things on the small menu not even available). Breakfast similar - my smoked salmon was brownish and I think microwaved from frozen (or tasted like it). Probably best to eat out in retrospect

Not disappointing - DIRE

Tired rooms. The soap fillers were empty. Shower soaked the bathroom floor. Room not serviced properly. Main problem though was that arriving back late evening for second night stay the electronic key card for my room didn't work. I had to ring for the night staff on my mobile because external bell didn't function. If I hadn't had a working mobile I would have been stuck. Staff produced a replacement card - didn't work; staff's own key card didn't work. I was then given a replacement room which had a physical key but had to spend the night without my night stuff including medication. No discount or compensation was offered. I had to ask and was granted an inadequate amount. Staff though were friendly and over-worked. Greene King to blame and I will be avoiding this and all other Greene King hotels in future

The hotel is an old property with our room in an annex attached to the main building with access via a courtyard. Our large first floor room was comfortable although a touch noisy with road traffic in the morning.

The staff were all lovely, couldn't offer enough help. The restaurant food in the evening had good choice and what we had was good quality, we enjoyed this, we also ate out in the evening where there was a good choice of different restaurants to choose from. I am not one to complain but our stay was for 4 nights of which our room was only serviced once, we had to use towels provided for all of our stay. Housekeeping needs to be managed as the carpets by the skirting boards were full of dirt, you could see this standing up. Room has net curtains which required washing. I am not picking at this with a microscope, it was obvious. Linen for beds and towels were spotless and looked new. I just think it is attention to the smaller details that need picking up. This hotel is friendly, attractive and comfortable, I would recommend it to my friends and family these smaller issues would not put me off.

We liked to stay there over the weekend. They have a beautiful garden overlooking the river, that was the best part! Room size was good and the bed and pillows comfortable.
