Base Camp for your Adventures
We are located in the Big Horn Sheep Canyon. Just minutes from gold medal fishing, kayaking and rafting on the Arkansas River, hiking, mountain biking, mountain climbing, off-road riding trails, skiing and hunting. Our cabin will provide a base camp for just about any outdoor activity you want to do. We are 12 miles east of Salida, Colorado, the Heart of the Rockies. We currently have 1 restaurant and 1 food truck, which is walking distance from the cabin, in Howard. We do not have a grocery store or gas station in Howard. Most amenities are located in Salida. We have a fully furnished 2-bedroom, 1 bathroom cabin with a queen bed in each bedroom. We can comfortably sleep 4. We also have a pack n play available. We have a fire pit with a grill by a creek that runs next to the property that is available when we are not under a fire ban. Our area of Colorado is semi-arid, and we are frequently under a fire ban in the summer. We have a picnic table by the cabin next to a propane grill. We live on the property behind the cabin and are usually available to answer questions or help you in any way we can.

Clean, comfortable and quiet! From the complete kitchen to the full-sized bathroom counter, everything was great. It was easy to find, and the hosts are right next door, so we got hiking recommendations and hosts were available by phone after we opened up the email from them!
Steve and Debbie are excellent hosts! Very friendly and will give you great ideas to check out during your stay! Had mule deer and turkey in the yard every day. One of our favorite stats we have done. We will make sure to circle back around to here again!
Lovely simple cabin- very clean. Well appointed. Only thing I would change is the mattress had a sag that reminded me of most beds in Ireland. Debbi was lovely. And there is a firepit!
Beautiful property with wonderful owners. If you’re looking for remote privacy, pick another stay. But if you’re looking for a comfortable stay that’s reasonable and super clean and full of friendly folks, this is your spot! They’re wonderful. We loved it, truly.
We always love staying at Base Camp. It’s the perfect spot to acess great spots to fish on the Arkansas River. House is clean and comfortable and the fully stocked kitchen makes it easy to enjoy cooking meals.
Nice quiet clean place! Went to ride my side x side and fish on the Arkansas river. Plenty of access to both. Great stay! Much better than a hotel stay with better amenities and cheaper than a hotel.
Centrally located for what we wanted to do and see.
A very nice place. You can tell that Steve and Debbi take good care of their place. Really enjoyed talking with Steve about what is going on in the area and just general conversation. Is a great place to relax between sight seeing and going to the music festival. The beds are very comfortable, got a good nights sleep every night.
Excellent location for what we wanted to do. Very clean, everything in the facility works and operates like it is in new condition. Steve and Debbi are great hosts and always a joy to talk to, good down to earth people with a positive attitude that makes you feel good. Thank-you, couldn’t have been better.
Easy check in, nice hosts, good location with a few great hikes and the river close. We couldn’t get the WiFi to work but wasn’t a big deal for us as we just went across the street to laundry mat when we needed it. Will definitely rent again when back in area.
This place lives up to it's name! Just a short, beautiful drive to Salida and Buena Vista. The house was very clean and well equipped. Steve and Debbi are great hosts and Steve gave us some local tips. I definitely recommend this house.
We stayed during here during a ski trip to Monarch Mountain. The cabin was perfect for my family! It was very clean & spacious. We really loved the heated mattress pads & also the family of wild turkeys & deer that came by the windows in the morning!! Would definitely stay here again!
We love staying here. I have lots of family that lives in Howard and this is the perfect place to stay when we go to visit. This was our second time staying at this property and we will stay again next time we are in town. It is a wonderful place to stay and has beautiful scenery right outside the door. I love being able to hear the creek when you step outside.
The house was spotless, quiet, safe, well maintained and in a good location. The homeowners were pleasant. responsive and helpful. A great vacation and a nice, comfortable place to come home to, after a day of hiking and sight seeing
Had a wonderful weekend at this cabin. The proximity to the mountains was key for us, but both the space itself and the owners were really nice. The stream that runs next to the cabin was a great place for the kids to play, the fire pit was a great early evening activity and the cabin had all the amenities one would expect. Will definitely consider staying here again the next time we’re in the area.
