Several museums and a restaurant are among the highlights on this pastoral hilltop setting with excellent views of downtown Sapporo.

The Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill is a scenic and popular hilltop gathering spot in the southern part of Sapporo. It consists of a green and bucolic park that offers spectacular views of the downtown district of the city. Snap photos from the viewpoint and pick out your favorite highlights from the incredible vistas.

Appreciate the utter serenity of the park’s green meadows, which present an idyllic setting complete with grazing sheep.

Consider the intriguing history of the park, which was formerly a research center. It served as the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce Tsukisappu Sheep Farm. Following World War II it was known as the Hokkaidō Agricultural Experiment Station. After people began flocking to the area for its stunning scenery, the viewpoint and park were built. Admire the stunning display of lavender in late spring.

See the statue of Dr. William S. Clark put in place in 1976 and marking a century since his arrival on the island of Hokkaidō. The American science professor was here to help the development of what is now Hokkaidō University. Take a photo of your friends copying his pose, an arm stretched wide in a gesture that’s at once pensive and aspiring. “Boys be ambitious,” reads the plaque on the base of the statue this was said to have been his catchphrase.

On a clear day, the view extends across the island and as far as Mt. Shokanbetsu and the Ishikari plain. Try the traditional jingisukan mutton dish at the restaurant and admire the replica ice sculptures in the Sapporo Snow Festival Museum. Check out the hot springs at the Hitsujigaoka Footbath and the souvenirs and ice cream of the Austria House.

The Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill is in Sapporo’s Toyohira ward. Ride buses south from the city center to get here in about 45 minutes. You can also drive the 6-mile (10-kilometer) journey in less than 30 minutes. Ample parking is available on site.

Explore the surroundings for nearby treasures such as Nishioka Park, the Sapporo Dome and Sapporo International University.
