  • A few kilometres downstream from Lake Taupo the river changes to some rapids for a short distance. When the rapids finish there is a drop which creates a waterfall. It all ends with this scene which is stunning. Only a 30 second walk from the car park to the river this shot was taken about a 5 minute walk further downstream on the main track at sunrise.

  • I would not usually consider a garden a must-see experience, but I am really glad a local told us to visit Hamilton Gardens. The experience of wandering through a maze of hedges that open into perfectly cultivated gardens plucked complete from other countries and other eras was quite possibly the closest I will ever come to feeling like Alice in Wonderland come to life. You never know what magical sight waits around the next bend in the path.

We received a lovely friendly greeting on arrival and a free upgrade. To top it off our room was extremely clean and had everything we required, we would definitely stay there If we were to visit Hamilton again.

Carpet was stained and because of that, appeared unclean. Also thecarpet was frayed aned torn at the entrance to the bathroom - causing a safety trip hazard. The SKY decoder box was sitting on a 40º angle on the top of the TV - not secured. Unit 15.

Ocean views. Lovely big self contained room with everything you need. Comfy bed and lovely balcony with bonus of small spa bath in bathroom. Would definitely stay again.

I could hear the TV in the room next door on my bed, this is made worse by it going till 2am each night. Their TV must back onto my bed headboard side. Conversations are muffled so soundproofing is somewhat non existing. Everything else was great but the sound issue was too hard to ignore in a motel/hotel

Home away from home.

My husband and i stayed here as we were in town for a Rugby game. The accommodation was only a 13 minute walk which was perfect. The room was very tidy and clean and had all the comforts of home. Really enjoyed the in-room spa which gave us a relaxing way to end the night. Would definitely stay here again.

Ballinor Motel, Hamilton.

Booked into a superior twin room unit. Twin room in hotel/motel usually means separate bedroom. Chinese manager at Ballinor was adamant that the bathroom was counted as the second room. The result was we were cramped into a single room unit.

Do not rent room number 1

Arrived to find we were in room number 1. Check in was painless. Front door doesn't shut properly, hopped out of the shower to find the front door wide open after thinking it was shut and locked! Had to try multiple times to get it to stay shut. Air con doesn't work properly and remote kept turning off everytime you pushed a button, maybe just flat batteries but took multiple attempts to set correctly. Bathroom very small and cramped. TV in room very small compared to other hotels. But the worst part is the managers /owners housing is built right above room 1 and they have young children that were jumping, crashing and banging right above our heads for half the night running around the house. No thought to the paying guests staying below. Would not recommend staying in room number 1 to anyone!.
