Com a falta de uso o castelo foi-se degradando. Recentemente foi recuperado e classificado como Monumento Nacional. É também considerado Patrimônio Mundial pela UNESCO. Um lugar cheio de história e que foi berço de Portugal. Não é à toa que em um pedaço da muralha original tem os dizeres “Aqui nasceu Portugal”. The Castle of Guimarães began with a monastery built by Mumadona Dias in the 10th century, before, therefore, the formation of Portugal. As the attacks of the Moors were frequent they decided to build a wall to protect the community and the monks that lived inside. It was this fort that gave origin to the Castle of Guimarães. Later, in the twelfth century, it was in this castle that Dom Afonso Henriques was born. Some years after he would become the first king of Portugal. With the lack of use the castle was degrading. Recently it was recovered and classified as National Monument. It is also considered World Heritage by UNESCO. A place full of history and that was cradle of Portugal. It is no wonder that in a piece of the original wall has the words "Here was born Portugal".

Fantastic stay!

Lovely hotel located in the heart of the old city. The short walk from the car park is no real inconvenience and the setting within the car free cobbled streets more than compensates. Beds were huge and really comfy and the breakfast was also superb!

This was my favorite hotel during my trip to Portugal! My room at the hotel was very nice. The breakfast was excellent. And the staff were excellent as well. The location is within walking distance of the castle, shopping and also very good restaurants. The hotel has a Michelin restaurant. We ate there and it is excellent.

This hotel is like stepping back in time. It is beautiful and is located on the main square of the old city. However it is very quiet and safe. We didn’t eat at the restaurant but it is a Michelin restaurant and is very beautiful. The breakfast they served in the morning was amazing. The room was very clean and in good condition. The wall thermostat needed some repair but it still worked just fine. The art work in the room and halls was beautiful. Would definitely recommend and stay here again.

I had a great stay at this hotel. The room was comfortable and clean, and everything was well-maintained. A Great Place to Stay

A fabulous boutique hotel in the historic centre of an historic town. Friendly, helpful staff, comfortable rooms and a good breakfast made for a memorable stay. Parking is secure either underground or on the street, albeit about 100m from the hotel. There are many restaurants, bars etc. very close-by.

Amazing property with views of the main square in town. Probably one of the best beds i have ever slept on and I am a light sleeper. You can hear noise from the square late at night but it didn't both us.

We like the location of the property in the old town. It was centrally located and within easy walking distance to many restaurants and sights. It is a nice walk to the old castle. It is also conveniently located so you can walk into the newer parts of town to shop and eat as well. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The buffet breakfast was well appointed and nicely laid out with excellent service. Eggs are freshly cooked to your preference. The wooden shutters on the room balcony and window were very nice. Hotel parking is at site located a short walk from the hotel and google maps directions to the hotel direct you up a one-way street. The only negative is that there was an issue with the shower pan separating form the wall in one corner which caused some moisture damage to show on the shower wall.

A superb refugee in the old town

This hotel, situated in the old town, was superb. We were greeted on arrival with a cup of coffee, and seated in this elegant, book lined foyer on very comfortable chairs. The bed room was spacious, elegant and offered all the toiletries. The sheets were super soft as was the bed. The one negative was the air conditioning did not seem to function and the lift at times malfunctioned. The staff were extremely warm and generous of their time. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel.
