We were at no.55, which initially i was a bit concerned about. However it was lovely, we had a large room at the front. Noisy in Fri night but ok for the rest of the time. You are right in the old town afterall!
Centrally located in downtown Funchal. Veronica was very helpful and always pleasant. She made suggestions on things to do and how to get around. The area is very busy at night and I could hear some early morning activity in the street below at times. It would not stop me from staying here again.
Right on the most picturesque street in the Old Town complete with a multitude of bars, cafes, restaurants and bakeries within a couple of minutes of walking. A respite from the high rise international chain venues. And Veronica is the best host ever!
We were not in the main part of the hotel but in a lovely big room further up the street, nearer to the centre of Funchal. When we stepped outside we were right in the heart of the bars and restaurants in the old town and a very short walk to the sea and the centre of town. Don't know what it's like in mid-summer but even though we were in the thick of it, the street sounds didn't bother us.
I am usually very positive about hotels but this is my worst experience so far. There was no check-in, we had to ask the store next door to give us the room keys. We tried several times that day and the following days to get in contact with the staff but there was no one at the desk each time. They forgot to put the remote for the air conditioning in the room so the first days were super hot, and when we finally met the lady at the desk (on our last night there) they turned the AC on for us and water and ice leaked into the room the entire night. Also, bring earplugs because it's very loud outside and it's hard to sleep through the noise. All in all I would not recommend this place to any of my friends.
My room was a 2 minutes walk down the road, away from the reception and where the breakfast was served. In the very center of the restaurants and bars. Despite of this busy location, there was no noise and the room was quiet. Very close to the teleferico, that takes you up to monte. Also a few minutes walk from the Marina. Facilities were very clean. The bakery next door makes delicious bread for the included breakfast.
Wide room but we haven't slept for three days because a pub in fron our room opened until 2 am and then , the bakery at ground floor opened at 5 a.m by playing music and songs for a better work (sigh). If you close the window you can't sleep because it's too hot. We asked to change rooms and the staff has sent us to another residence (residence casa do lado or something like it at number 55 of the same street) much poorer than the mariazinha , with shower not working well and loosing water, but quite calm, at least. Breakfast poor, only the bread was ok (taken from the same bakery above described!).
