Beautiful cabin! Would highly recommend! The king sized beds in each bedroom with their own bathroom was very convenient. The beds were super comfy, the views were spectacular, and the cabin had everything we needed. Great mini-vacation!
What a great property, great views, and very comfortable. My family and another family of four stayed for the weekend to enjoy Fort Davis and the MacDonald observatory. Highly recommend staying here. Beautiful stars at night very quiet and wonderful fresh air.
The four of us loved staying at this house. It was perfect for a gathering place with other family members staying at the state park. The kitchen was well equipped, beautiful property to explore and the fireplace was ideal. We would definitely stay here again if in the area.
The Rock House was a great place to stay! We enjoyed the views on the property, easy drive to town, and quiet area it's located in. Overall, it was very clean, neat, and offered a cool experience for our family.
Great 2 night stay. Convenient to the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute and McDonald Observatory, although the star show from the property was already unmatched! Very clean, spacious and comfortable. Hope to return with family/friends!
Wonderful property with sweeping views of the Ft. Davis area. We greatly enjoying staying in The Rock House. It is well located to enjoy all the adventures the Ft. Davis area offers. The property manager is very available and thoughtful in every way!
We loved our stay at the Rock House with all of its windows and views. The bedrooms all had their own bathroon, which was great. I would highly recommend this house and look forward to returning.
My family and I had a great time! The scenery is unmatched and the peace and quiet are exactly what we needed! The owner answered any questions that we had right away and made the process simple and easy. We will definitely be going back!
Rock House Cabin was Great! 5-Stars for sure.Only thing that could make it better, would be to put up a game feeder out in the pasture. We watched 14-Elk the next canyon over to the south-west, Mule deer and 2-Aoudad Rams, would be nice to watch wildlife closer on the 20-acres! Look forward to next stay!
Our family did a weekend get away to the Davis Mountains. The Rock House for perfectly situated and appointed for our stay. The views are incredible and location offers easy access to area attractions! The historic house gives you an authentic feel of mountain living and offers spacious bedrooms and living areas. Maggie was great and we did not encounter any problems during our stay. We will return!
We have stayed at Rock House many times before and always enjoy it. The view from the back porch is amazing, and we love the convenient location near “downtown” Fort Davis and the Chihuahua Desert Research Institute! This time, we were impressed to see new furnishings, new linens, and other improvements throughout the cabin. Thank you for another wonderful stay! ❤️
Very Nice rock cabin! Nice location. Maggie was a great host answering any questions we had!
Would love to see a feeder placed on the property!!! Watched Mule deer on the south side of canyon with binoculars. I think that would only accentuate the beauty of the cabin in its great location sitting on the porch watching the wild life up close! Would be a good treat to a great cabin.
Our group consisted of my wife and I, son, daughter-in-law, and 5 year old grandson. The Rock House was as described and we thoroughly enjoyed our 4-night stay between Christmas and New Year's. We were unable to get tickets to the McDonald Observatory Star Party, so we made our own on a beautifully clear and cold night. What a view! Thanks so much.
The bar for a five-star VRBO review has moved with our recent stay at Rock House in Ft. Davis, because--WOW!--this one is five big and bright stars (deep in the heart of Texas!). The home is clean, spacious, thoughtfully decorated, comfortable, and magnificently cozied-in to the natural beauty visible from every window and deck. Even when 12-20 degrees outside (most mornings of our stay), we were warmed by the wood-burning fire (find a source for wood in Ft. Davis) and the brilliant long views of the rugged West Texas landscape. If you're looking for a spot to retreat, renew, rejoice in the beauty of the Earth--while also being less than 30 minutes from McDonald Observatory, Marfa, and Alpine--you won't find a better stay. Our group of 5 lifelong friends couldn't have been happier.
Three couples, long time friends, wanted to meet near Ft. Davis to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We loved that each bedroom had private baths and king size beds. The view from the back deck was delightful, as we could see Mitre Peak in the distance. As the three women had attended Mitre Peak Girl Scout Camp in our youth, it was rather magic to see Mitre from afar. It was awesome to view the sunrise & hear my husband singing “Morning Has Broken” as we arose for breakfast. From the porch, we could see McDonald Observatory (we had tickets for the star Party). We enjoyed our visit to the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center, across the highway from us. The kitchen has been updated and there is plenty of storage in the laundry room for all the extras you need to stash. We had two cars and an RV - plenty of parking. It was a perfect weekend!
My husband and I are from Colorado and we joined my son and 11 year old grandson from San Antonio for 2 nights at the rock house for some star gazing. I had heard that the Fort Davis area has some of the most spectacular views of the night sky in the country. We weren’t disappointed. We were also in close proximity to the McDonald Observatory and Fort Davis.
We weren’t disappointed with our stay at the Rock House either. It offered lovely views of the surrounding hills and lots of space for walking with our dogs. Maggie, our host was amazing. The house was in perfect condition. Her messages were welcoming and she was quick to respond to our questions. We will definitely return for another visit.
The Pictures do not do justice as the views are spectacular, both am and pm. Be prepared for a long and dusty road to and from the property, but again, it is worth the view and the privacy. The only input I would have is to somehow fix the floor vibration in the dining area. As you sit at the table, the floor and the table vibrate and you feel it while sitting. And either note that the ice maker is not working, or provide ice and/or trays. And finally, have a few spare trash bags for the kitchen receptacle. Otherwise are stay was fabulous and recommend to all.
This beautiful cabin offers an exceptional retreat for anyone seeking both tranquility and the perfect stargazing experience. The cabin itself is charming, blending rustic design with modern amenities, making it both cozy and comfortable. Every room has its own full bath - a necessity for us with two teenagers.
During the day, you can enjoy breathtaking views or go across the street and hike. As night falls, the sky transforms into a spectacular view of the stars. This area is known for its lack of light pollution, which makes it ideal for stargazing. My daughter said she had never seen so many stars.
The cabin is well-equipped, providing all the comforts of home. The grocery in town has a large enough selection to get whatever you need for food.
The outdoor space features a spacious deck perfect for relaxing and taking in the natural surroundings while enjoying morning coffee. This place is truly nothing short of magical.
The proximity to Fort Davis also means there are plenty of opportunities for daytime adventures, from hiking in the nearby state parks (Balmorhea!) to visiting the McDonald Observatory. We did the star party - be prepared to stay out late, but it’s so worth it.
Overall, this cabin offers an unforgettable escape, combining the best of nature with the comforts of home. It's an ideal destination for anyone looking to unwind, relax, be adventurous, day trip to various cities, and then marvel at the night sky.
Loved this place, wish we could have stayed more than one night. 3 bedrooms were the perfect number for the 4 of us. The balcony was so wonderful, I could have spent hours there. The cabin is off the beaten path, but that made it more peaceful. Thank you, Maggie.
