If you're poorly prepared, travelling can be a real challenge. But there's no need to hit the panic button just yet. Follow these handy tips for a stress-free start to your holiday in Song-do. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Air travel can be a stress-free experience if you take the right things. First things first, you'll need basic toiletries, such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a clean pair of socks and a good read. Next, find room in your hand luggage for your electronic gadgets, chargers, your medications and perhaps a proper neck pillow too. Last, but definitely not least, don't forget to bring your passport, travel docs and your bank cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Squeeze all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked baggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated by security. Pointed or sharp objects, like a pocket knife, and dangerous products which are explosive or flammable, such as flares, bleaching agents and poisons, are also prohibited.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your priority when deciding what to wear during your flight. Loose, breathable clothing is a sensible choice, as are flat, closed-toe shoes.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can pose a risk on long-haul flights. It's the result of blood clots forming due to poor circulation and inactivity, so do some gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression tights or socks.

As seasoned travellers know, the secret is to be well prepared before you arrive at the security gate. That way, you'll be hopping onto that plane to Song-do in the blink of an eye. Follow these tips and get your holiday off to a terrific start:

• First things first. Your travel documents and ID will need to be inspected by airport security. Have them close by to avoid fumbling around for them.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Remove anything on you that is likely to beep. This includes things like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy jackets or coats. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• All your electronic devices, including your tablet and phone, must also be separately scanned.
• Remove liquids and gels from your carry-on luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each product should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you a few precious minutes. Boots and bulky shoes are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Slip-on shoes are usually not.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, put them in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed on board.
