Wherever you're jetting in from, flying can be an enjoyable experience if you're prepared. We've put together a list of handy tips that will help get your Mark holiday started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane ride can be a cruisy experience if you take the right gear. First of all you'll need basic toiletries, such as toothpaste, a toothbrush and some deodorant, a fresh change of clothes and a good read. Secondly, find a spot in your bag for your electronic devices, chargers, your important medications and perhaps a blow-up neck pillow too. Lastly, and most importantly, remember to bring your passport, travel papers and some money.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of restricted items differs between air carriers, the general guide to follow is nothing sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like box cutters, razor blades, fuel and fireworks. Sporting equipment like ice skates, and items that could harm other people, such as firearms and swords, won't be allowed on board either.

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of an aircraft aren't the place for a fashion parade. Layer up with comfy clothing and go for shoes that are flat, roomy and easy to remove.
• You've probably heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by long periods of inactivity. To reduce your risk on board, stay hydrated, consider wearing compression socks or tights and keep your feet and legs moving.

The secret is to be organised before you arrive at the security gate. That way, you'll be stepping onto that plane to Mark in no time flat. Follow these tips and get your trip off to a fantastic start:

• First things first. Your travel documents and ID will need to be inspected by security personnel. Keep them handy so you don't have to dig around for them.
• After that, both you and your hand luggage must be X-rayed. To speed things up, remove anything that is likely to set the alarm off. Items such as your belt, coat and earphones need to go through the machine.
• For just a few minutes, you'll need to unplug from the digital world. Your phone, tablet and any other electronic devices will also need to go through the scanner.

• Sharp or pointed objects (like knives and scissors) can't be taken on board. They'll be confiscated at security, so pack them in your checked luggage.
