• First, pack in your passport, official ID, cash and vital medications. Next, you'll want some in-flight entertainment to while away the hours. A juicy book and a phone crammed with your favourite shows are always good options. If you intend to catch more than just forty winks, a quality neck pillow and a pair of earplugs will also come in handy. Finally, leave space for a toothbrush and some cleansing wipes so you'll step off the plane looking fresh and ready to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Pack all your full-sized bottles of hair gel and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) won't be allowed on. Sharp or pointed objects, like your beloved Swiss Army knife, and dangerous products which are flammable or explosive, such as flares, chemicals agents and gasoline, are also not allowed.

• Your goal here is to feel as comfortable as you can. Opt for shoes that are easy to slip on and off, dress in loose, breathable clothing and remember to bring a jacket in case you get cold in the cabin.
• Caused by prolonged periods of inactivity, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot condition that can affect passengers on long-haul flights. Lower your risks by drinking water, keeping your legs moving and wearing compression tights or socks.

• Slip-on shoes are a great footwear choice as you're less likely to be required to remove them when passing through security. Big boots and other heavy-style shoes are usually subjected to extra screening.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
