No matter where you're coming from, flying can be a pleasant experience if you're well organised. We've put together a list of handy travel tips that will help get your DeLand escape started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

Sharp or pointed objects, like your precious Swiss Army knife, and dangerous goods which are flammable or explosive, such as flares, bleaching agents and poisons, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• You'll want to choose comfort over style. Prepare for temperature changes in the cabin by layering up, and wear flat, slightly roomy shoes like slip-ons.
• You've probably heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by long periods of sitting. To lower your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression tights or socks and keep your legs and feet moving.

• Airport security personnel first need to establish that you have a valid ID and travel documents before anything else. Have them ready to show.
• Next up is the X-ray machine. Remove anything metal on you that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• Your electronic gadgets like phones and laptops will also have to go through the machine to be scanned. Don't worry though, you'll be back online soon enough.
• Remember to remove liquids and gels from your carry-on luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each product should be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.

• Airlines won't allow any sharp or pointed objects in the cabin. If you must bring these kinds of items, check them in.
