They property and views was beautiful. It is a wonderful place to relax and rest. The private beach was awesome. The host was very accommodating and wonderful. The billing was not right but the issue was resolve by the host. I would recommend this listing.

Return Visit - That Says It All

Quiet and Relaxation
I visited Christi in January, during the off-season. I was looking for a quiet place next to the beach, and she made that happen! Her property is right on the shore. She has everything you need for an enjoyable stay. I brought my dog, and she spoiled him with treats. Every time we went out he raced to the porch to see if she was there. While I didn't take advantage of everything available, she had golf carts, kayaks, a bonfire setup, grilling, a swing, and chairs facing the beach. She's a gracious host and fun to talk to. I'll be going again the next time I need to decompress!

Slice of Heaven
Christi and Rick shared their slice of heaven on earth with us for a week and a half. They make you immediately feel like you are visiting family or old friends. Check in and out was incredibly easy. The hosts are excellent communicators before and during your stay, and very responsive to any request to ensure you have everything you need or want. All the amenities of home are there….plus some! Washer/dryer, golf cart use, fire rings with wood included, and THE BEST chairs and swing for morning coffee or evening sunsets overlooking the Chesapeake. Don’t forget the private beach at the end of the yard. It couldn’t be any easier to get to the beach! We used the kayaks and paddle boards. No extra rental fees….it’s ALL there for you to use (life jackets included). There was so much to do there we didn’t get to do it all - so we’ll be back!

Our Getaway at Thelma's Dawn Getaway
If there were more stars to award we would absolutely do so. Our family had an amazing time we because of all the work Christi and Rick do to prepare the way. We had great "first time" experiences here: our first time kayaking in the bay, and the first time we ever had crabs freshly caught and steamed right out of the water. The pictures on her site are only a taste of what's here. You see a great, decorated and clean, cozy room and read the amazing list of amenities, but you can't appreciate all of it until you are actually here and see this lady in action. She is an amazing ball of energy! When the site says you are family when you get here, you feel it. They are welcoming and we immediately felt like old friends. There is so much to do you can just park the car and not leave the entire stay. Want to go kayaking? Paddle boarding? Do it. Watch the waves and the sun rise or set everyday from perfectly positioned chairs or a swing? Nap in a hammock by the beach? Do it all. And more. We love wildlife and soaked in the ospreys, bald eagle, crabs, pelicans and countless other beautiful creatures. We also enjoyed Christi's birds, koi, and cats! We had carefree days of never knowing or caring what time it was or what day of the week it was. We enjoyed nightly evening rides through the quiet neighborhood on her golf carts, taking in the scenery and the breeze filled with all the beach scents you wanted: jasmine, salty air, the occasional grill and bonfire smoke. This is a place that feels protected from outside rushes and worries. You can just relax or play at will. Our neighbors in the Sandy Hill Sunset unit were terrific and so friendly. We enjoyed watching their children playing and we all had an amazing lunch on fresh crabs, steamed by Christi herself! Thelma's Dawn Getaway isn't just a place you go to vacation, it's an experience. You can't get this kind of enjoyment without Christi's and Rick's hard work. What they have done to this property is amazing. They have adapted it into a mini resort. We had everything we needed right at hand, including a fully appointed kitchen in our unit that we took advantage of everyday of our stay. She is a true animal lover and won over our little chihuahua right away! From picnics on the beach, to peaceful night's sleeps, breakfasts on the patio, shopping in downtown Cape Charles, and endless beach days, this is far and beyond our best, and favorite, family vacation! Relaxing Getaway
No frills efficiency inside — all the frills one could want on the outside. We just wanted to relax and walk the dogs on the beach and around the wooded neighborhood. But for those who like beach activities, there are all kinds of options. Very friendly and accommodating hosts!

AMAZING VACATION with amazing people
The host is the most friendly, helpful, fun person We have ever come across. It was like being part of the family and still alone on vacation with the love of my life. So many fun activities like fishing , golf carts, sports, and bonfires right on the beach. Exactly What We Were Looking For
The property is exactly what we were looking for. It was quiet, waking up and walking across the yard to walk along the beach first thing in the morning. Christi is a great person, you can tell she really enjoys hosting people at the property, and genuinely wants to hem to have a good time. Our pup fell in love with her (the treats didn't hurt, haha). I'm reluctant to tell the world how wonderful this place is, but only because I want to be available to book anytime I need it. We'll certainly return.

We Loved Thelmas Dawn Getaway
The apartment was clean and had a lot more amenities than any hotel I have ever stayed in. The beach was beautiful and we were able to have a romantic bonfire on the beach after dark. The hostess went above and beyond to make sure that our vacation getaway was special.

Staying at Thelma’s Dawn was truly a one of a kind experience where we enjoyed the most stunning of sunsets, jaw dropping starry skies, a private beach that was truly a slice of heaven and the most helpful tour guide Christi. We struggle with the words to review this place because it is best to feel the amazing energy of it and to experience the beauty of serenity and solitude yourself. Staying here felt like an intimate look into a calmer American culture overlooked by many people used to a busy and chaotic cityscape. This isn’t a place to stay to indulge in the typical tourist traps of most modern vacations. This is a place to indulge your 5 most basic senses in the simplicity of the surroundings that is nature. We truly just got lost sitting in the lovely reclined wooden chairs facing the ocean, hearing the crash of the waves and looking up at the absolutely phenomenal open sky. Christi shared an app with us that explained what constellations we were looking at, which made it fun to understand our place in the universe! One of our favorite moments was when we saw the brightest green light shoot down from the sky, which we think was a meteorite! Christi offers many activities from building a fire on the beach/backyard to fishing, kayaking and even crabbing! My husband had the privilege of going out with Christi on the boat and retrieving the crab traps from the bay, which led to a fresh crab dinner and an education session by Christi on how to eat them properly. What an experience! Our dog had quite the time being off leash and running into the ocean and on the sand! Christi was attentive feeding her treats while encouraging follow through of commands. Our dog Yana didn’t walk by the porch without checking to see if Christi was there. You can’t review this amazing paradise vacation spot without reviewing Christi too because she is one of a kind! She makes sure you have all you need to enjoy yourself, even if making sure you have the greatest and brightest flash light to get you to the end of the yard! She is educational, thorough and ensures you experience all you can from this unique secluded pocket of Virginia. As far as the room, everything was clean, the bed was very comfortable, the AC unit regulated the room temp very well and the mini fridge/kitchen supplies are just enough for your needs. Leave your judgments with the city lights and come and enjoy this hidden gem located conveniently on the edge of the Earth! We had a magical time here

Thelma's Dawn is a hidden gem
I booked a four-day stay at Thelma's Dawn. I wanted a place that was on the beach, bring my dog, Koa, and be at peace. Thelma's Dawn was the place and more. Christi, the host, was the best! She really made us feel like we belonged there. She was very welcoming. I was worried about the weather, it was forecasted to have thunderstorms through the week, but to my pleasant surprise, the days were filled with sun. Of course, a shower or thunderstorm would break through but pass by. The beach is private and oh so serene. Koa and I walked the beach in the morning and it was wonderful. Calm waters, warm enough to just jump right in but not too warm that it wasn't refreshing. When we weren't exploring other towns the afternoon was spent swimming or just sitting and enjoying the beautiful view of the water. Did I mention the great hospitality, Christi had fresh crab ready for us to eat when we arrived...yum. The property faces east so you can catch as many sunsets as the days you are there. The room was just enough. The first night there were three of us, it was comfortable. My son had to get back to Norfolk so the rest of the stay was my daughter and I and there was more than enough room. I found the queen bed very comfortable, I slept very well. My daughter was on the day bed and she said it was comfortable. Christi allowed us to do our laundry there which was great, no dirty clothes when we got home. Did I mention how great Christi is? Yea, she was awesome! The golf cart was a fun ride, we took it around the neighborhood, Koa loved it! So, if your looking for a place to get away, be at peace, this is it. It's worth the ride from the main road. Cell service was minimal around the whole area, even up along Route 13, but that did not bother me too much. Thelma's Dawn has wifi and it reached out to the beach, it was all I needed to be able to make a call or text and even post pics on Facebook. A meal must be had at El Maguey Mexican Restaurant, authentic and delicious. Christi shared some vegetables from her impressive garden. Cape Charles main street shops were nice to peruse. Chincoteague main street shops were also nice to look around and get memorabilia. My daughter and I hit a lot of antique shops along 13 too. You will have to do some driving to get anywhere, that's the nature of the area, and it's worth it. I hope to make Thelma's Dawn a regular place to visit and get away.

We had so much! Christi was awesome! She called to let us know the room was ready ahead of time that we could check in early. She had great, open communication and was so helpful. The property is very low key- 20-30 mins from town (stores) which was perfectly fine with us! Our kids (7 & 10) enjoyed being able to bring our dog on vacation with us! We all got to try out kayaking and fishing and riding the golf cart. (everything was on site)! Christi cooked crabs and made shark bites that we all got to try as well! We hope to go back and stay next summer! It was well worth every penny!!!!!!!

We stayed for a weekend and had an excellent time! The host was very friendly and informative, and accommodating when we had to arrive late due to traffic. The property was stocked with everything you could possibly need for a beach weekend, which was very convenient and saved us time and trouble packing our car. The air conditioning was cold, the bed was comfortable, and there were plenty of pillows.

A very special place
My husband and I loved Thelma’s Dawn so much, we’re going to try to go again this summer or early fall. Everything was perfect, the unit was nice, with comfy linens, and the kitchen stocked with pots, pans, dishes, ...spices...you name it! The grounds are beautiful! A gigantic fire pit, koi pond with a little wooden bridge walkway, vegetable/herb garden...all within steps of a pristine, private beach. They’ve got kayaks and paddle boards ready and waiting for you. We brought our own rods and tackle to fish on the beach, but they even have that there for you if you need. There’s also a golf cart for you to use during your whole stay, Christi and Rick are amazing hosts, you know they are right there if you need anything, but not intrusive at all. It’s a very special place. Relaxing, private, and very laid back. Even the drive in from Route 13 was nice. A pretty country road that winds and turns it’s way through farmland and open space. Thank you Rick, for the chili on that cold night...it hit the spot! Thank you Christi for sharing your little slice of heaven with us, we really enjoyed hanging out with you, we had so much fun talking and listening to music with ya! Can’t wait to come back.

An awesome get away!
We arrived and Christie was right there to greet us. She walked us through the property and everything was clean and looked just like the pictures. She handed us both a beer, got our dog some treats and walked us out to the beach. The pictures do not do the sunset there justice. Everything was wonderful! Christie was always available if we needed anything (which we didn’t since she has already thought of everything) but, when she found out this was my husbands first time at the beach and he’s never had soft shell crabs she went out of her way and got some and her husband cooked them for us and they were delicious! We loved them! This property is everything that is listed and then some. We take our dog everywhere and being able to stay on the water and let him swim all day and not have to worry was amazing. We had such a wonderful trip and we will 100% be coming back when we can. If it wasn’t for work back at home we would have stayed another night! If you want a low key and relaxed vacation we’re you feel like you are staying with your friends and family this is the place for you. I know we will miss the beach and Christie. Our dog will miss all the butt scratches and treats! Again, this place was amazing and I will 100% be coming. Thank you Christie!!

When this family first arrived, I knew it was going to be a great weekend! They were very nice and friendly and we shared many laughs right at their arrival! They brought their beautiful (handsome) fur baby and this pup was such a well mannered and playful dog. They took great care not to let the dog in the apartment until he had been rinsed off and dried. This was after each beach walk! They trusted me with their fur baby, which means the world to me! I was able to introduce the husband to soft shell crabs and got some extra brownie points as he loved them! When I went in to clean the apartment after they had left, they really made my job easy! They took the sheets and towels and put them in the laundry room and the apartment was CLEAN! I still did my wiping with sanitizer and fogged, but they left it as they found it! Thank you for that! A little slice of heaven!
We LOVED our stay at Cristi and Rick's Silver beach "Thelma's Dawn Resort". The beach had clean and soft sand and was always uncrowded...for hours at a time we saw no one. We watched long lines of dolphins heading inward and then back out to sea. Kayaked with beautiful bald eagles soaring above our heads. Saw osprey...sand crabs...wild Turkeys....my son was thrilled to see all the wildlife. Cristi even helped him feed a nearby horse...and he got to hold her Amazon gray parrot. Not to mention the beautiful koi pond all magically lit up at night. For our family who loves nature- we loved it all! Including the fact that our lab Ben got to enjoy all this too! Cristi is a true recreational therapist...with what she and Rick have created on their property..and their genuine care and reaching out to make sure you're having a great time ....it's truly much needed therapy via recreation. Oh, I need to mention the golf carts- such a wonderful treat! Sunsets...amazing. Cristi built a beautiful fire for us by the beach...our first ever. Gave us a Japanese lantern experience we won't forget. I'm sure I'm forgetting to mention something....there was so much that made this place special. I feel like we found a really special spot in this world. Thanks Cristi and Rick for the FABULOUS EVERYTHING over the past week. When we pulled out to go home my son says, "I sure am going to miss Cristi!" That says it all! ....and did I mention the biggest softest fluffiest towels!!! Thank you!!!

I was SPEECHLESS!! That was an amazing act of kindness and I want him to know just how much I appreciated it! He is a wonderful young man and I am positive that you realize it everyday! Amazing experience with wonderful host.
We stayed at the "Thelma's Dawn Getaway". cottage and loved it! This is a very cozy cottage, but it has all that is necessary - stove, oven, small microwave, pots and pans, kitchenware, utensils, etc. Attached to the cottage is a small storage room that has the clothing washer and dryer, which is very convenient to have. Cottage is comfortable with a lot of natural light. "Thelma's Dawn Getaway" cottage is located at the end of a quiet street, which is exactly what we needed since we came with three kids and two dogs. The overall feel of the entire place is very peaceful. In the yard, you have a gorgeous Koi fishpond, small playground for the kids, and a lot of room for the kids to simply run around. Cottage has access to a private beach. Beach is serene, natural beauty all around, clean, waters are calm and shallow so excellent place for the children. Property owner has kayaks, beach toys, etc. Christi, property owner, was wonderful! We decided to bring my son’s two friends at the very last minute and Christi was nothing, but welcoming and supportive. Christi organized an extra bed for us, linens and was helpful in every way. When kids wanted to have a campfire, Christi was also supportive of that idea and stayed up until past 1 AM to ensure that everyone was safe. Christi was wonderful with our two dogs, including allowing us to let them have a lot of freedom, running around without their leashes and enjoying life! Christi was warm and caring; with great sense of humor and wanted nothing but to ensure that we had a wonderful time and enjoyed every minute of it! Thank you so much Christi for welcoming us and for letting us have so much fun! We are hoping to see you again soon!

Great place to call our home for 2 weeks
We really enjoyed our stay with Christi & Rick! The weather was cold but was a quiet amazing location right on the beach. We had fires & walks in the evenings. I was able to use the wifi to work during the day, our 13 yr old could do her remote learning at the same time. My husband Stuart was working on our property we recently purchased and Rick was a wealth of knowledge helping us to find our way around a new area. Our 13 year old learned to drive a golf cart - the quiet roads/ area was perfect for that! Our dog absolutely loved to run on the beach every morning and evening! And what can I say about the sunsets.... even in the cold weather the sunsets were breath taking. We were right next to them if we needed help but never felt like we were intruding on them or them on us. We are down to earth people who were looking for a place to feel comfortable that our daughter and our dog would feel comfortable. (My daughter was trying to plan a visit with Christi before we left!!!) If you are looking for the Taj Mahal, this isn't it. I however want to let go of stress during a break - not stress about keeping someone's home immaculate throughout my visit. If you want to stay in a place where you aren't going to feel bad about enjoying the outside, getting a bit of sand on the floor and want to hang out/ meet with some genuinely nice folks around a fire - than this one is for you. We will definitely be back! Thank you for everything Christi & Rick! Our stay was perfect!

We will definitely go back to this home! Christi supplied everything you needed and more. Not only that, she is the warmest friendliest person I have ever met! There is so much to do there like kayaking, boating, fishing, sending up Japanese lanterns, cruising around in golf carts, etc! Anything you needed Christi was there to help and accommodate. We found the property to be exactly as advertised. Christi & Rick were welcoming hosts and ensured that we had a nice time. They provided rods, tackle, bait, and ice for fishing from the shore. We had some luck- and enjoyed cooking our own fresh caught fish. Would highly recommend to adults looking for a relaxing time.

Relaxing quiet beach getaway
This was a surprisingly quiet, clean and relaxing beach without the crowds. We brought our dog and he had a ball on the beach running around. Christi made herself always available if needed for any needs or information on getting around the area. She provided fishing rods and bait when I wanted to try out my (non-existing) fishing skills and even shared some of the fish she caught. We certainly had a relaxing time.

Great place to get away and enjoy the outdoors
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This is a small efficiency on the side of the owners house. It has a comfortable queen bed, private bathroom with decent shower, a couch and kitchen area. They have a great beach area for walking, swimming, kayaking and fishing on the bay. The neighborhood and area are nice and quite. Great for running, biking, or riding the golf cart they loan you that's included. We cooked all our own meals for the week. From fresh fish I caught to shrimp, oysters, clams, crabs, steaks, and pork chops. Enjoyed coffee in the morning in the chairs overlooking the bay and beautiful sunsets there in the evening. We had fires on the beach at night while enjoying a glass of wine. They have one of the nicest grills I've ever cooked on. I enjoyed being able to catch nice fish right out of the back door. The only downside was Christi came out and showed off catching the biggest fish, haha! Christi and Rick were great hosts. They also have a very interesting goldfish pond that I enjoy taking to Rick about. If there was anything we needed that we couldn't find, Christi would get it, all you had to do was ask. They have an ice machine right there. So no going to the store for ice for your beach cooler or fish cooler. The ice is nice, the place is great, and Christi and Rick are fantastic! Can't wait to get back!

Perfect for relaxing
Everything about this place is exactly how it’s described in the listing, except the location is really too beautiful to put into words. The water was clear and perfect temperature for swimming and kayaking, the beach itself was quiet and peaceful, and the yard had the most amazing chairs for watching the sunset. We loved it! Christi was an excellent host to us and our pup, and we hope to be back again someday!

5 Stars are not enough to rate our stay with Christi and Rick.
From the time Christi met us in the driveway to welcome us, until we had to leave 4 days later, our vacation was wonderful. We could have not asked for a more beautiful location. This was our first trip to the bay and it was so much more than we expected. We started our mornings with coffee on the beach and ended it with fishing poles in hand. Thank you for the wonderful time!!

Just what we needed!
Our stay was everything we hoped it would be. It’s a secluded paradise! Our typical vacation is a condo with a balcony right on the ocean or a house with a private beach on Lake Michigan but I am so glad we switched it up this time. With covid-19 especially, it was perfect! We brought most of our groceries but there is grocery stores close by. We used The Great Machipongo Clam Shack drive thru close by and cooked our meals in the apartment. The clam shack is AMAZING and has the best seafood we have ever had. We got king crab legs (weighing over 1lb each leg; HUGE), clams, raw oysters, colossal peel and eat shrimp, and red snapper fish there and it all was delicious! We have always wanted to catch our own crabs and actually catch saltwater fish successfully. Although this is on the bay, you can’t see across it so you still get an unbelievable sunset/view and direct ocean vibes. You can still also catch saltwater creatures. The best part for us was the beautiful secluded beach and all the fishing tackle/traps we needed for successful fishing. They have several kayaks and also one especially equipped for fishing if you don’t want to fish from the bank. The water is very shallow even far out with little to no waves most of the time so it was perfect for our little ones. Christi was very accommodating and always readily available if we needed anything, she provided. The kids loved the kid kayak, playground, Gulf cart, koi pond, and of course the beach. One thing to consider is that we rarely had reception to make phone calls and it took a while for texts or social media posts to go through. And if you are wanting a luxury interior, it’s not. But if you are wanting to have the ultimate experience on the beach, this is WONDERFUL! We were not disappointed and will be back for sure.

Had a great time at Christie's property. Very friendly and went out of her way to accommodate us and make us feel so very welcome. Great spot!
We had a great time here and the sunset views were incredible! The location couldn’t be better. This was our first visit but between the property owner and the awesome neighbors we met, it almost felt like we were staying with old friends. We had such a great time at Thelma’s Dawn. We smoked meat, rode the golf cart, did paddle boarding, fished, crabbed, and kayaked. So many fun activities that the hosts so generously allow their guests to use! Our two puppies also loved playing in the water. Such close access to a beautiful beach! We will definitely be back.
