Barn Apartment on Farm Near Old Rag and Shenandoah National Park
Our barn apartment located in the heart of Madison County, Virginia on a 120-acre working farm is just a short drive to Old Rag Mountain, White Oak Canyon and Shenandoah National Park. The property includes hiking trails, a pond to sit by and relax, farm experiences and The Farm Store at Watercress which offers our Animal Welfare Approved eggs and meat, fresh seasonal produce, local items and souvenirs from Shenandoah National Park. Our guests have access to our three-acre river property on the Robinson River, which is a stock trout steam, located less than 3 miles from the main farm. We also offer tubes to rent during the warm months. The studio apartment, located on the second floor above our equipment shed, requires climbing a flight of stairs. Outside is a small deck and bridge to an outdoor firepit area, setup with a table, chairs and propane grill. Inside the open space has a queen size bed, futon couch, ceiling fan, pool table, gas fireplace (available in winter months only), large screen television with a large selection of DVDs (no cable or streaming). WiFi is VERY limited at this time. There is NO CELL SERVICE at this location. There is a landline phone available for use. The efficiency kitchen/bar area has a full-size refrigerator/freezer with ice maker, convection/microwave oven and induction cooktop, coffee pot/grinder, toaster and is fully equipped with dishes, pots, pans, utensils and a few spices and oils. There is one small bathroom, with a standup rain shower. All towels and linens are provided. The apartment faces east and offers mountain view in the winter and overlooks our main garden and farm store area. Our resident goats, zebu, mini donkey, Buster Brown and his pet pig George reside in a field and wooded area behind the building, and you can often seem them from the apartment. If you would like to meet the crew, sign up for a farm tour, free to all guests. If you would like a more intimate experience with the animals, we have a Snacks and Cuddles farm experience which involves feeding special snacks, walking, brushing and sometimes getting jumped on by the alpacas, zebu, goats, donkey, pigs, big and small, and ducks and chickens. If you would like any items delivered to your apartment, such as our Breakfast Basket, cookout sampler or fresh flowers. Please make arrangements in advanced, if possible. Please note NO PETS or animals of ANY kind are allowed in this building due to the close proximity of our livestock guardian dog, farm animals and our resident cats who live in this building. *** Our resident cats and dogs are allowed in this unit, when it is used by the family, so if you have allergies to animals this might not be the place for you. If you are looking for additional space, we offer a few glamping and very private camping spaces on our farm. Some of these spaces are pet friendly. Please ask Jen for details. Driving Directions: We are located across the street from Blue Quartz Winery and Shotwell Run Brewery (1.5 mile walk), The Little Country Store, The Possum Store, The Mountain Museum and Riverford (our property on the Robinson River) are 3 miles from the farm. Graves Mountain Lodge and Restaurant, The Graves Market, Old Rag Trailhead, Sharpe Rock Vineyard, Revalations, DuCard Vineyard, Early Mountain, Bald Top Brewery are all 10 minutes or less. White Oak Canyon, Sperryville and Madison are less than 15 minutes. Skyline drive: Thornton Gap is about 25 minutes and Swift Run Gap is 35. Culpeper (train station) is 30 and Charlottesville (airport) is 45-1 hour. Our driveway is gravel, it's long and narrow, so we restrict campers or large RVs. AWD or 4WD could be required during winter months. Please email or text for additional information.
Cell Service is limited in our area. There is no cell service at the apartment or at our farm store area. The is FULL coverage at the end of our driveway, up a few trails, near Wizard Rock and across the street at Blue Quartz. AT&T customers have a bit more luck here and south towards Madison but no service in Sperryville. Verizon customers are limited service here but full coverage in Sperryville and Madison. Skyline drive will have areas of no/limited/full coverage.

We enjoyed our stay on the farm. Check in was easy, Jen was very accommodating and a wealth of information about the hikes and other things to do in the area.
Loved the location. Clean. Bed was comfortable. Loved the kitty cats. Only complaint is that we would’ve liked to have had drapes or blinds on the windows & coffee pods available with cream & sugar.

We enjoyed our stay at the barn apartment. It was well equipped and a cute studio apartment. We had a little trouble getting in touch with the owner to get the WiFi information as there is no cell service once you get to the apartment. I would suggest making sure you get that information prior to your arrival if you need it. Other than that, I would highly recommend! We were in town for a wedding so didn’t get to take advantage of all the hiking in the area. Next time!
We had a lovely stay, so much more than we expected. This is a very special place, if you have the opportunity to stay don't think twice. Will definitely return to experience other sites on the property. Thanks so much Jenn & John
Great location and an ideal disconnect from the world. No cell service and no WIFI make for an ideal slow down vacation.Nice apartment with a small kitchen set up
Nice that you can check in as early as 2 pm. FYI- Kitchen has cooktop only. No oven except microwave. Overall not as clean as we expected. Otherwise ok.
The host, Jen, was super friendly. You’re literally right on her farm so you see her out and about regularly with the animals. My son loved being able to roam around and see the chickens, especially. The old 1800s cabin is super cool. Just an all around awesome time unplugging from the world and reconnecting with family.
