Set aside plenty of time to explore a vast and fascinating museum that digs into the archaeology and history of Israel through artifacts and artworks.

The Eretz Israel Museum aims to comprehensively cover the history and culture of Israel. Explore its numerous permanent and temporary galleries to be impressed by how well it has achieved this goal. Take your time exploring this expansive and engaging museum, which features as its centerpiece an archaeological excavation from the 12th century B.C.

The museum was founded in 1958 on the grounds of Tel Qasile, the ancient port city that forms this central exhibit. Learn about the earliest inhabitants of Tel Aviv and explore the surrounding gardens to see artifacts that were uncovered during this archaeological excavation, as well as a stunning Byzantine bird mosaic.

Browse the other galleries that chronicle the story of the region. Exhibits cover topics such as numismatics, ceramics and glass. Stop at the Ethnography and Folklore exhibit to read about different facets of Jewish life. Plates, religious clothing and other items from different eras of history show varied depictions of Jewish holidays such as Hanukkah and Purim.

The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Topics vary but will often focus on Israeli culture and artistry. Check the museum’s website to see what is being displayed during your trip.

Visit the museum’s Lasky Planetarium and relax among the stars. Take a seat for a variety of different shows, which cover topics such as the science behind the sun and what it’s like to be an astronaut. Seek out a reconstructed olive oil factory, which displays traditional equipment for creating the famous ingredient.

Eretz Israel Museum is located in the northern part of the city, just north of the large HaYarkon Park. Local buses stop outside the museum. Parking lots are available nearby if you want to drive here. The museum is closed on Sundays and open later in the evening on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There is an admission fee children enter for free.
