Emancipation Park Tours and Activities

Enjoy the colours of the Caribbean in this relaxing park, where tropical flowers and artworks symbolise Jamaica’s journey to freedom.

Unwind in Emancipation Park and take in the fragrances and colours of the Caribbean. Roll out a picnic rug on the grass and relax under the shade of a palm tree. Walk through the grounds and admire the roses, orchids and bougainvillea or go for a jog along the park track. Meander through the park to enjoy water features and sculptures that symbolise Jamaica's African heritage and the country’s road to freedom.

The park is 3 hectares (7 acres) in size. It was once an abandoned area known locally as the dustbowl. When Emancipation Park opened in 2002 it quickly became a favoured recreational space. Today locals and visitors come to unwind and escape the noise of the city.

When entering the park, a 3-metre (11-foot) high statue by artist Laura Facey is the first thing you'll see. Redemption Song is a sculpture of a bronze male and female engraved with the words “None but ourselves can free our mind”. These lyrics by Marcus Garvey were made famous by legendary singer Bob Marley.

Stroll through the park to see the other statues, known as Adinkras. These artworks represent Jamaica's African roots and pay homage to the Jamaican people. Spot symbols of the two-headed crocodile, the “Eban” symbolic fence and the wafa tree.

Admire the flower beds where Jamaica’s national flower, the lignum vitae, and the national tree, the blue mahoe, grow. See five rose beds and gardens filled with tropical flowers, coloured orchids and bougainvillea. At anytime of the year, various species are in bloom. Their bright colours reflect the country’s optimism and emancipation.

Go for a run around the 500-metre track. If relaxing is more your thing, unwind with a picnic under the shade of an enormous royal palm tree or listen to the tranquil sound of a water feature.

There are a number of organised activities and events held throughout the park. See a music performance on the park stage or play a game of chess with one of the locals.

Emancipation Park is located in central Kingston on the intersection of Knutsford Boulevard and Oxford Road. Walk or catch a taxi from nearby attractions and hotels.
