Dordrecht Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Kinderdijk featuring a house and a river or creek
Delve into the history of South Holland’s first city, see its monuments and take in the water views from a café terrace in this port city on the confluence of rivers.

Dordrecht received city status in the 13th century and was once important and wealthy because of its port. While no longer a major Dutch city today, Dordrecht remains rich in architecture, culture and history.

Get a feel for the city by taking a walk through its historic streets. Follow the “Rondje Dordt” (Dordrecht Round) signs through the streets, rivers and canals to take in many of the highlights. Take your time and stop at the monuments and sights along the way or do a quick round and revisit your favorites later.

You can’t miss the Grote Kerk (Great Church) with its commanding position in the city center. The church’s origins date back to the 11th century. Changes were made over the centuries. Climb the 275 steps to the top of the bell tower for panoramic views over the city and countryside. Inside check out the remarkable stained-glass windows.

Get your culture fix by visiting some of the many historical and cultural sites around Dordrecht. The Dordrechts Museum, set in an old abbey, has an impressive collection of paintings by Dutch masters such as Rembrandt.

Next visit Het Hof van Nederland. The exhibits in this beautiful monumental building give a detailed insight into the history of the country and the region. Experience the life of a wealthy trader in years gone by with a visit to the lavish Huis Van Gijn (Museum Simon Van Gijn). A toy collection in the attic is a must see for kids.

Go Dutch with a bicycle ride through the flat countryside. The wetland area of National Park De Biesbosch is a labyrinth of nature full of birdlife. Be alert to spot beaver dams built across one of the many waterways.

Visit the old city gate of Groothoofdspoort for the best views of Groothoofd. Meaning “Big Head,” Groothoofd is the local name for the confluence of three rivers. This once was the most important mooring spot for ships.

Dordrecht is only 40 minutes from Rotterdam by car, but before leaving the area, drive the short distance to De Kinderdijk to visit a unique UNESCO World Heritage site at sunset. See 19 windmills lined up along the canal, one of the best photo opportunities in the whole of the Netherlands.
