Explore the natural wonderland of CotopaxiNational Park, a vast protected area of Andean highlands and páramo (alpineneo-tropical tundra). Located southeast of Quito, this protected reservesurrounds the Cotopaxi Volcano and constitutes a number of valleys, rivers andlagoon landscapes. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery while hiking, mountainbiking, camping or horseback riding.

From anywhere in the park, you’ll be infull view of the 5,897-metre (19,347-foot) Cotopaxi Volcano. This snow-cappedvolcano, named by the Incas “neck of the moon”, has a history of violenteruptions, with the latest explosion occurring as recently 1940. Despite itsactivity, experienced climbers flock to this volcano each year to scale itsglaciers. Less daring travellers can enjoy a number of easier ways of seeingthe landscape.

For the easiest way of seeing the bestfeatures of this parkland, book a tour through operators in Quito. Thesedaytrips include hikes to the Cotopaxi, Pichincha and Napo provinces, as wellas a few interesting mountain features nearby. Alternatively, hike at your ownpace using the park’s network of walking paths. Amongst many intriguing speciesof flora and fauna, look out for native páramo plant species, pumas, llamas,marsupial mice, Andean wolves and deer.

Learn about the park’s wildlife andhistory at the small museum and visitor centre in Cotopaxi. These exhibitsdisplay the origin stories passed down from indigenous Ecuadorians, specimensof native animals and a relief map of the volcano. Many of the park’sattractions, including hiking paths and this museum, are located about 4,500metres (14,764 feet) above sea level, so be prepared for possible light-headedness,altitude sickness and acclimatisation time.

Find Cotopaxi National Park 53kilometres (32.9 miles) southeast of Quito. The park requires a small fee forentry. Tours and daytrips charge separate fees. Tours range in price, which isdetermined by the activities involved, included meals and group size. The besttime to visit the park is between December and April, when warmer temperaturesmake conditions ideal for outdoor activities.
