About this property
Lovely quiet cottage overlooking the Cheviot Hills, real fire, private gardens
Clayton Cottage is a real home from home, nestled in the tiny village of Howtel in a row of 10 traditional cottages, on a minor country road. All you can see from the front is rolling hills!
We have made sure that you have everything you need for your special self-catering cottage holiday, including wifi, local information leaflets of places to visit, books and maps.
Families are very welcome and there's so much to do and see locally, with castles at both Ford and Etal just 5 minutes away. We're happy for you to bring one well behaved dog.
Three bedrooms upstairs; double, twin and small single. Modern bathroom downstairs with bath and shower and lovely open plan lounge/dining area, with smart TV, real fire, settees, and a great view. Kitchen and utility has all you need and although the cottage has heating, we also make sure you have wood and coal for the real fire stove if desired.
Clayton Cottage is situated right on the edge of the Cheviot Hills, so the views are spectacular and you can walk in any direction straight from the cottage. The local farm is well maintained and quiet - apart from the odd sheep in the fields around us!
If you're looking for a quiet get-away, in a truly rural setting, then look no further.
We also use our little cottage regularly, so it's kept in tip top condition. For your safety we've fitted double hand rails on the stairs, thermostatic shower and smoke and CO2 alarms. (No smoking please.)
There a private and fenced rear garden and off road parking to the rear. BBQ and garden furniture provided.

We had a great week at this lovely, clean, well equipped and cosy cottage. Well placed for touring around North Northumberland- Cheviot Hills, beaches and Scottish Borders. WiFi at cottage was good and consistent.
This cottage had everything we needed and was perfect for our family. The rooms were clean, warm and very comfortable; the kitchen was well equipped and the garden was perfect for us and our dog. The location is stunning and ideal as a base from which to explore. Would have no hesitation in recommending this property and would love to return.
Beautiful cottage with stunning views.
Had everything we needed.
Shed was perfect for the bikes.
Weather meant we didn't make full use of the garden, but was great to have the option
Cosy, immaculately clean cottage with lovely little touches which made it welcoming. Well equipped with beautuful garden at the rear and stunning view of the Cheviot hills at the front. Car parking space a bit of a squeeze but layby just up the road was large and safe to park in. Close to Ford and Etal, delightful castles and old, quaint villages. Easy 30 minute journey to closest beach at Spittal. John, the caretaker and his wife Anne next door but one. Super helpful and friendly. Wonderful stay and would recommend.
We found this cottage to be perfect and ideal for our family's needs. Everything was clean when we arrived and in working order. If you are wanting to get away from everything this cottage is for you. The views are stunning not only when driving to and from the cottage, but also when you wake up in the main bedroom.
We found the location to be perfect for us and it was nice to not only explore Northumberland but also pop over the boarder to Scotland.
Communication with the owners have been brilliant, it was also reassuring to know the caretakers of the property live on the same row of houses.
We would love to return to this property in the future.
Thank you 😊
We're just heading off after an amazing week and wanted to thank you for creating such a welcoming holiday home.
The property was cost and welcoming with everything we needed. Over the week we visited Holy Island, Hadrian's Wall, Cragside, Edinburgh, Coldstream, Seahouses, Berwick Upon Tweed, waterfalls, steam trains and various beaches.. we even found a country fair.
Can recommend the Red Lion, the fishmonger in Seahouses and butcher in Wooler.
We've left a board game.. Throw Throw Burrito.. in the cupboard. On reflection we aren't the right family for it as it usually ends in tears, injuries or both. We hope it brings future visitors less stress and more fun!
We'll be back!

Howtel cottage
Quiet area which was lovely and peaceful. Quite a drive to nearest village Wooler which had a co-op. Pubs there were hit and miss. One shut as coolers broke, one served food which was limited and not nice and other no food. Really wanted to go out and have nice meals.
The property was not bad, but description did not say downstairs bathroom nor that the stairs are the steepest ever, with handrails so wasn’t a problem for me as took time but my elderly mum who needs to go toilet in the night really struggled and slept downstairs last 2 nights and we came home a day early as she was frightened of falling. It really was steep!
The garden is enclosed but didn’t say it was across a back alley where the cottage residents park and although traffic was minimal, I had to pick my dog up and carry to garden.
WiFi was hit and miss. Brought my firestick which I downloaded some films and it was buffering so didn’t watch anything but the free view. Cottage was dated and lots of cobwebs around fireplace and back of tv. But otherwise ok. I would not have chosen this cottage if I was aware of the stairs and garden as it was a constant worry.
A lovely well equipped cottage in a beautiful area. There is plenty to do in the local area from beautiful countryside and beaches to historic houses and castles. The kitchen is compact but well equipped. The beds though could be improved with new mattresses as they are a little lumpy, especially in the twin room but this would not put us of returning in the future. There is a small private garden which is useful for BBQs. Thank you for letting us stay.
A fabulous place to stay. Within easy reach of all of Northumberland's many attractions. Really quiet to relax, without light pollution to view the stars on a clear night. Well equipped kitchen, comfortable lounge and lovely comfy beds, with soft pillows for a great night's sleep. Great view from the lounge and bedroom windows.
Lovely holiday location for exploring Northumberland. Cottage well equipped for self-catering holiday.
Well fenced garden for dogs/ children but note that it is not attached to house (across a very quiet access lane).
Did I mention the view?!
We rented this cottage for a week so we could visit family that we hadn't been able to see for almost 2 years. We were a little nervous about how COVID-safe it would be, but the owners and caretakers had thought of everything and we felt right at home.
The location is beautiful, the neighbours are friendly and the garden is wonderful. Highly recommended.
The property was well equipped and located in a very beautiful, peaceful setting. It was essential to have a car for days out and shopping as Howtel is basically a row of house and some farm buildings, but parking was fine and it was a short drive to local attractions. The area has lots of great options for days out - great beaches, historic towns - and the Scottish border is very close so it's easy to pop to Edinburgh for the day. The property owners were very helpful and we had a lovely week. Can recommend if you want somewhere to recharge your batteries and relax.
A perfect stay set in a lovely quiet valley. The cottage had everything you could possibly need and was very comfortable. The garden was private and a quiet place to sit with only natures call to listen to.
Although we were in the middle of the countryside we felt secure in the knowledge that the caretaker was only 2 doors away if we had any unexpected problems. The position of the cottage was perfect for us, being a stones throw from the countryside, the sea and just down the road from Scotland. We will definitely be back.
We arrived to find a lovely, clean and so comfy cottage with absolutely everything we needed. There was even ice in the freezer for our first G n T!
Beautiful rural location, the only sounds of sheep, cows and birdsong. So quiet at night so the best sleep in a very comfortable bed. Loads of drawers and storage for everything you need for your holiday too.
Location perfect for exploring beautiful Northumberland, castles, beaches, history and very friendly people. Masses of walking too. Loved the beach at Bamburgh, so did the dogs!
Great Sunday lunch in Wooler, we had the small option and that was more than enough! Fabulous fish lunch in Seahouses in the Ship, really old pub and hotel. You will not go hungry in Northumberland.
Lunch at Adam and Eve was delicious using all local produce too.
Even went to a local butcher in Kelso to buy haggis for dinner!
We didn’t eat out in the evening, easier for us to lunch with dogs.
Also there were so many dog friendly pubs and shops it was great.
Certainly somewhere we would love to return to, thank you Simon and Liz for creating a home from home.
A really pleasant house on a quiet road with delightful views. Very relaxing place to stay - all the things you need (bath, shower, washing machine, tv etc) and really close the hills, coast and borders towns...
