With a climb that may be steep at times, this trail offers grand pay-offs from the top of Mummy Cliff with panoramic views of the Waterpocket Fold.

Whether on a short or long trip to Capitol Reef National Park, there is no better place to experience the park’s grandeur than with a visit to Chimney Rock Loop. Covering 3.3 miles (5.3 kilometers), the trail winds up and above Chimney Rock itself and onto Mummy Cliff. Relish the set of beautifully varied landscapes, a tasting menu of all the vistas and environments Capitol Reef offers. Allow time to stop for homemade pie in Fruita on the way out.

Pull off the road to the trailhead, near Panorama Point’s scenic vistas. Taking the route counterclockwise ensures that the biggest ascent is at the start of the hike. You can go against the norm, putting the elevation challenge at the end of the hike.

Warm up through the undulations of the multi-colored Chinle formation, then huff and puff up the total of 600 feet (180 meters) of elevation leading to the top of Mummy Cliff. Spot Boulder Mountain in the distance to the south, with its snowcap often still present during summer.

Pause for breath and note the unique appearance of Chimney Rock, which stands proudly apart from the remainder of a sandstone cliff. Appreciate the views of the badlands stretching out below at the edge of Whiskey Flat. Drop into Chimney Rock Canyon itself, then head back to your car, unless you want more adventure on the paths of Spring Canyon.

The Chimney Rock Loop trailhead is located in the center of Capitol Reef National Park, just off the park highway and a 5-minute drive from the park’s entrance. Drive from Fruita in about 10 minutes. A parking area with restrooms is located near the trailhead.

Walk the route in about 90 minutes, with frequent stops for photos. The trail is most heavily trafficked during the day, when the temperatures are also highest, so come early in the day for quiet and comfort. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Several campgrounds in Capitol Reef National Park are open year-round. Pay the one-week entrance fee or purchase an annual pass for access to numeral federal attractions.
