This house was perfect for our visit. I grew up in the area and this trip was to bury my dad. I spent so many hours on and in the South Toe river fishing with my dad. This trip, I spent the most time at the fire pit and on the deck enjoying the sounds and view of the river. The house was perfect for the rest of the family too. I fixed several meals in the kitchen and had everything needed. I loved several design features in the house, and I'm now considering a few of them for an upcoming remodel of my home. Communication with homeowner's representative was on point. Would definitely recommend. For future trips, we will check this home for availability first.
This is the second year my family and I have rented this property and we plan on making it an annual trip. Absolutely love how relaxing it is to just sit in the back porch and have a morning coffee or afternoon glass of wine and watch the river. The neighborhood is quiet. The beds are comfy. A perfect relaxing family vacation get away spot.
My grandparents owned this property for over 20 years. When searching for a place to stay in the area for a family vacation we were over joyed to find their actual house listed and jumped at the chance to go home again.
Some updates have been made but overall the house was still just as we remembered it. My favorite part was sitting on the upper deck and looking out over the South Toe River and having my morning coffee while the sun rises or a nice glass of wine in the evening.
Beds were super comfy. Kitchen is well equipped with spices, pots & pans, and Tupperware. Plenty of room for our whole family. Neighborhood is safe, quiet and friendly.
If you have a little one be advised that 3 of the 4 bedrooms are downstairs. Kitchen, living room and 1 bedroom are upstairs. The stairs are original and the spindles are wide enough apart for a child to fit thru so you may want to bring some safety measures to prevent an accident. We used some paracord to deter our almost 2 year old from playing between the bars.
Lots to do. Plenty of yard space to run and play in. Play 18 holes at the Golf Course up the road or have lunch at the clubhouse. Hike Roaring Fork waterfall (only a mile hike, most of which is even terrain)just down the road or hike to the top of Mt Mitchell from the Black Mountain Campground (trail 2.5mi from the house 5.5 mile hike to the top) 40 drive to the top of Mt Mitchell, 1 hour drive to Grandfather Mountain, 1.5 hours to Blowing Rock or Asheville.
We picked out teen daughters and two of their friends up from church camp in Black Mountain. We had planned to spend time in and on the river, but due to two of the girls having ankle injuries our stay became less active.
The house was very comfortable. Large sectional sofa allowed for all the girls to recline and watch movies. The beds were very comfortable in all of the rooms. The kitchen was adequately stocked with essentials. I loved the large gas stove. There was a 6 seat dining table, a 4 seat table in the kitchen and a 6 seat dining table on the porch allowing us to eat meals as a family and play games.
One issue was the kitchen faucet leaks if you don’t hit the exact sweet spot to turn it off. I notified the owner already.
The one thing I would say was a real downside was the highly perfumed laundry detergent and trash bags. I and one of my children are very sensitive. I tried cleaning the washer, but even with free and clear laundry detergent the perfume of Gain was there after several loads of laundry.
We would stay at this house again. The space is excellent for a large family. The sound of the river running is very peaceful and calming. The porches had lots of seating options to enjoy the beauty of the river.
Best of all when I contacted the owner about checkout procedures. She said enjoy your last evening you don’t need to do anything. What a relief that we could sleep in for a few more minutes and still leave on time.
Our stay was excellent. The house was very clean and has all the amenities. Our kids enjoyed being in the water. The host was very courteous and highly response.
This home is beautiful and comfortable and the river behind the house is lovely. The owner is kind, super responsive, and helpful. We will definitely be coming back. The kitchen had everything we needed to do a little cooking and the beds were very comfortable. The neighborhood is quiet and private but everyone we ran into (in the neighborhood and out and about) was friendly.
