The best area to stay in Burgerwald is the historic Old Town, known as Altstadt, which offers a central and convenient base for exploring.

The Altstadt is Burgerwald's true heart, a pedestrian-friendly area filled with cobblestone streets, traditional Bavarian architecture, and a real sense of history. You'll find many of the town's best restaurants, independent shops, and cafes here, particularly around the central Marktplatz and along Hauptstrasse. The iconic Burgerwald Castle is also just a short walk up from the main square.

For couples seeking a romantic and authentic Bavarian experience, the Altstadt is ideal. You'll be within easy reach of everything, allowing for leisurely strolls, intimate dinners, and visits to the local museums and galleries without needing to rely on transport. Many hotels here offer charming, traditional settings.

Families will also find the Altstadt very convenient. Its pedestrianised streets mean children can explore freely, and the proximity to attractions like the Toy Museum and the Castle makes sightseeing easy.

The best time to visit Burgerwald is during late spring (May-June) or early autumn (September-October) for pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

During these months, the temperatures are mild, making it ideal for exploring the Bavarian countryside and enjoying outdoor activities. You'll find the hiking trails around the Burgerwald Forest are particularly enjoyable, and the beer gardens are lovely for a relaxing afternoon. There's also a good chance of experiencing local festivals without the peak summer tourist numbers.

For those interested in winter sports, the period from December to March offers excellent conditions for skiing and snowboarding in the nearby Alpine resorts. Many hotels in Burgerwald offer shuttle services to the slopes, and the town itself takes on a festive, cosy feel with Christmas markets in December.
