Surrounded by the stunning Yorkshire countryside, this city is famous for its architectural gems, curry restaurants and UNESCO-recognised film industry.

Although a modern city, Bradford proudly retains its Victorian-era landmarks and remnants of the Industrial Revolution. It’s a city built on immigration with a diverse population ranging from German settlers in the 1850s to Bangladeshi and Pakistani newcomers in the 20th century. Once the world’s most important wool trading centre, Bradford today is a Curry Capital of Britain and the first city to receive UNESCO City of Film status.

At the heart of the city centre is Bradford City Park, a contemporary urban space framed by the opulent Venetian-Gothic style Bradford City Hall. Cool off in the summer in the fountains of the park’s Mirror Pool, where a light show takes place every evening. A short walk away is the Alhambra Theatre, a venue for live music, musicals and pantomimes. The National Science and Media Museum showcases the city’s film, radio and television industry.

Wander the streets of Little Germany, which was the centre of the city’s wool trade and takes its name from the German merchants that settled here in the 1850s. Grand Victorian buildings and former mills line Chapel Street and Field Street. Admire other notable sights such as Bradford Cathedral and The Wool Exchange.

More historic sites and lush parkland spread around the city’s outskirts. Visit Bolling Hall Museum, adjacent to Bowling Park and Cartwright Hall, in Lister Park. Ride the century-old Shipley Glen Tramway through woodland at the edge of Saltaire, a UNESCO-listed village renowned for its Victorian buildings.

Summertime festivals bring vitality to the city. Come for July’s free Bradford Festival and appreciate the talents of local dance troops, musicians and street theatre actors. August’s Infest UK and September’s Bingley Music Live attract hordes of music fans.

While in Bradford, don’t miss the chance to sample mouthwatering cuisine at authentic Asian restaurants inspired by the flavours of Bangladesh, India, Kashmir and Pakistan.

Trains travel direct to Bradford from Leeds, London, Manchester and York. Continue your adventure into the breathtaking landscapes of West Yorkshire. The Forest of Bowland and Yorkshire Dales National Park are less than 90 minutes by car to the northwest.

Bibs

My hometown is getting more depressing by the year. More shops closing in the town centre and those that are open are pound shops, vape outlets and bookies. Shame really.
