Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the biggest nutmeg tree forest in the world.

When you enter Bijarim Forest, you can’t help but notice the aroma of nutmeg in the air. This peaceful oasis on the island of Jeju offers the enticing opportunity to stroll through the largest collection of nutmeg trees anywhere on the planet. The forest is only a short drive from Jeju Island’s main city but it feels like another world entirely, with a collection of more than 2,800 majestic nutmeg trees, many of which have stood tall on this site for five centuries, or even longer.

The trees that make up Bijarim Forest form a scented, green canopy and, whatever time of year that you visit, a walk here is a pleasant and relaxing experience. The forest is well maintained, with five kilometres of walkways winding through the trees, which are best explored at a leisurely pace. In autumn, keep an eye out for fallen nutmegs and during spring look for the cheerful bright-red blossom on the branches.

Another legendary sight in the forest is the 25-metre high ‘New Millennium Nutmeg’, which at 800 years old is one of the most ancient nutmeg trees in the world. The enormous tree boasts a six-metre girth and, up above, branches form a 15-metre canopy. No wonder it is viewed locally as a symbol of Korean strength and spirit. This particular tree has also taken on spiritual significance for many of the locals, and when you are standing beside its imposing presence, it certainly gives off a distinct aura.

There are some interesting parasitic plants to be found in Bijarim Forest, many of which are extremely colourful. Azaleas, orchids and the maples, with their red autumn leaves, provide a vibrant backdrop to the nutmeg trees themselves – and make for great photos.

You should allow a couple of hours to really enjoy Bijarim Forest. The attraction is open every day although opening hours are slightly shorter in the winter months – note that there is a small entrance fee. The Donghae line from Jeju City station will take you to the shuttle bus at Sewha-ri, which will drop you at the forest.
