The 74,567 hectares of sub-tropical rainforest in the heart of Hunter Valley which makes up Barrington Tops National Park is a goldmine of stunning natural wonders and exciting outdoor pursuits. The stunning combination of lush canopy and many rare animal species makes Barrington Tops one of the most unique and popular destinations in New South Wales. You could spend days exploring this huge national park but a day trip will let you take in many of the most popular attractions. Tramp to the top of the 1500-metre-high plateau at the summit of Barrington Tops – the extinct volcano from which the park takes its name – for incredible views across the seemingly endless canopy. A huge array of trails of differing degrees of difficulty wind through the huge forest, including Carey’s Peak walking track, a 7-kilometre trail which takes you past snow gum forests and a historic hut.For those looking for a two-wheeled adventure there are numerous mountain bike trails, while there are also plenty of tour companies in the area who offer exciting canoe trips down some of the park's rivers. Fishing is another popular activity here and you’ll find tackle and gear in any of the local petrol stations, while nature lovers should keep an eye out for rare echidnas and eagles among the trees. If you’re looking to stay for more than a day, check in to any of the campsites, many of which offer hot showers and gas barbecues. However, be sure to plan ahead as there is no food or water on sale within the park. Barrington Tops National Park is a 1.5-hour drive north of Newcastle and there is free parking and admission. You should note that the park can sometimes be closed due to fire warnings or poor weather.
