Once the residential district for ancient Athens, this neighbourhood is both a gateway to ancient monuments and a lively hub for eating, drinking and shopping.

The Athenian district of Plaka is home to a range of museums of monuments, but it remains popular for its dining and shopping opportunities as well. This charming neighbourhood, formerly a residential area for the ancient Greek city-state, is now a labyrinthine arrangement of pedestrian streets and alleyways. Wander through the narrow, winding streets of the “Neighbourhood of the Gods” and you will stumble upon a multitude of cafés, restaurants and bars as well as a wide range of boutiques, art galleries and historical sites.

Many of the area’s cafés and restaurants have pleasant outdoor seating areas, which make perfect vantage points for taking in the lively atmosphere of Plaka. Grab a seat in the shade, relax with a cool drink and watch the street performers in action. Try the mezedes, traditional dishes served up like tapas, and follow up with a glass of ouzo, an aniseed-flavoured liquour that is customarily poured over ice cubes.

Walk down Plaka’s main drag, the storied Adrianou Street. This thoroughfare serves as a gateway to a numerous other city attractions. Plaka is rich in ancient history, home not only to the Library of Adrianos and Monastiraki Square but the Ancient Agora of Athens as well. Head to the Tower of the Winds to see a truly remarkable construction from the first century.

A number of museums can also be found in the district. Take your pick from the Museum of Greek Folk Art, the Jewish Museum of Greece and the Athens University Museum.

Hike further up the slops of the Acropolis and you will reach Anafiotika, a neighbourhood that resembles something you might expect to find in the Greek islands. With ancient Cycladic architecture and purple bougainvilleas, this scenic little area is truly resplendent.

Plaka is centrally located in Athens. A convenient starting point for exploring other areas, the neighbourhood is easily accessible via the Monastiraki train station. Plaka is a worthy destination at any time of day, but it is a particularly pleasant locale for finding a few hours’ escape from early afternoon sun in warmer months.
