Visiting the Dead Sea can be an expensive affair, but public Amman Beach is an attractive and affordable way to visit. The beach is long and well-maintained. With so many amenities available, you can easily spend the entire day here. Take a dip in the sea, read a book and enjoy some food at the restaurant with open-air dining.
Located just over 1 mile (2 kilometers) from the main stretch of Dead Sea resorts, the beach offers a range of facilities. Make use of the restaurant, basketball courts, sun umbrellas, comfortable lounge chairs and freshwater showers to wash off the salt. There is even a modest amusement park.
If you have never stepped into the Dead Sea before, you will soon see that swimming here is not like swimming anywhere else. Not only is the Dead Sea located at the lowest point on land, it also has one of the highest saline contents of any body of water. The water here is eight times higher in salt than the ocean. Because of this, your body will float incredibly well in it. Try to swim and you will just bob to the surface.
Keep in mind that this unique water can sting the eyes a little, so it is best to avoid dunking your head. Instead, float peacefully on your back and enjoy the sensation of being supported by the water.
The water and the mud here are also very high in other minerals in addition to salt. Take a handful of the dark mud and rub it on your skin, as it is said to make the skin silky smooth. Many high-end spa and cosmetics brands source their materials from the Dead Sea for its beneficial properties.
Be aware that locals typically swim or wade in the water wearing their street clothes. Tourists can wear swimsuits instead, but you may want to choose a less revealing suit or wear a T-shirt to avoid drawing attention.
The official name of the beach is Amman Beach Tourism Resort, Restaurant and Pools. Children are admitted at a reduced rate. Pay extra and you will be able to dine at the restaurant’s buffet.
